OOC: Xanth thread

I was driving back home tonight, trying ot think of new ideas... One hit me when I was passing a weeping willow tree and remembered a pun I had read about people crying their eyes out when beneath one...
"Xanth would be fun."


For those of you who haven't a clue what I'm talking about:

Xanth is a magical world, that exists opposite of our "Mundania" (A term Xanth inhabitants have for the normal world). Its geographically the same as Florida. Through the center of Xanth is the Gap Chasm, an enormous canyon a mile wide which is generally forgotten except for those who stumble upon it. The Gap is guarded by a resident dragon, known as Stanley Steamer, and is crossed by means of treacherous bridges.
Each human character in Xanth is born with a unique magical talent. These never repeat in individuals throughout the entire history of Xanth; however, they can be very similiar. In addition to the human characters, Xanth is populated by centaurs, demons, dragons, gargoyles, goblins, golems, harpies, merfolk, naga (Snake people), nymphs, ogres, zombies, curse fiends (people whose cursing is truly that- a curse on those they yell at), and all other manner of fictional beasts. "Mundanes" do sometimes manage to end up in Xanth.
Xanth is filled with puns: A location known as Isle of View ("I love you") for lovers, The moon is close enough that flying creatures may land there; one side is sweet and honeyish, the other has curdled and become cheese, because it saw what was happening on Earth and Xanth. Plants may bear fruit of all descriptions (pie trees and shoe trees are common) or they may be carnivorous (such as the tangle trees).
There's also "the Adult Conspiracy"- It hides how to summon the stork, how to swear (as swearing can cause fires, curdling, and other negative damage if used "incorrectly"), and how the sight of women's panties will cause a guy to "freak out".

There are magicians (The most important being Humphrey, the Good Magician and keeper of the books of all knowledge of Xanth), Royalty, and bad guys galore. If you're curious about char's of the books, go here. (Fair warning- BIG list.)

Feel like giving it a shot? You can use a favorite char from the books, or take on one of your own. Just remember- only humans get magic talents, but the "crossbreed" creatures do not (being alive IS their talent!).

Talent: Enhancement - Anything she wills to be stronger or better, becomes just that.
Age: 21
Bio: Daughter of King Dor and Queen Irene, Ivy is next in line for the throne of Xanth, much to the dislike of her younger brother Dolph. Stubborn yet kind, she's often found wandering Xanth to help out her soon-to-be kingdom and its people.

Species: Demoness
Talent: N/A. She's a demon.
Age: Old enough, thank you!
Bio: Metria likes to cause trouble, often shapeshifting to confuse others... but her inablility to find the right word for a situation gives her away easily. She greatly enjoys pestering people, and will follow them when she finds out she's foing so- though reverse psychology often gets her to help her "victims" out with situations while making her proudly believe she's being a pest.

...I take it no one else read this books.
Bummer.

Centaurs

What about centaurs? They have magic! Like what's his name, the centaur who could create an aisle of magic.
But it's a great idea! I just have to think on it a bit!

It's been a while since I've read the book. I know most centaurs consider magic use obscene in centaurs. I remember one centauress whose magic was that it enhanced her beauty, and her husband was to make a magical flute appear.

Anyway, I would be very much interested in participating. Just give me a sec to think up an interesting talent.

Xanth

I loved the Xanth series! I think I read every book as soon as it came out. The worlds that Piers Anthony created kept my imagination running and gave me so many hours of pleasure. I laughed at the sometimes horrible puns, enjoyed the characters, and I loved the concept of the Adult Conspiracy.

I think your idea of using Xanth is an excellent one. The thought of taking his characters to the next level, one I'm sure Mr. Anthony wished he could do, is very appealing.

Whatever happened to Piers Anthony, anyway?

According to his website, he's still going strong. Do you remember a book of his entitled What of Earth?

Talent: Can stretch and reshape his arms and legs, as well as create temporary new ones with the same ability.
(I was thinking of projecting blue dots on the wall, or changing the color of my...well, never mind. Someone else already had those talents in the first Xanth book).
Bio: An orphan and a ne'er-do-well, Octaver is currently residing in a tower of the Castle specifically adapted to prevent him from using his abilities to escape.
