get rid of pesky insects...

ok so heres the problem, i have searched online to no avail, i have asked pro gardeners to no avail, how do i get rid of the damn gypsy moths(Lymantria dispar)

i live in the eastern part of New Jersey and have major gypsy moth problems every year. i am not really sure about the surrounding towns but here it's pretty intense. every year no matter what i do they come back in larger numbers and eat the trees, not only has this killed a few trees per year but they are just disgusting to look at, during the day the oak trees around here appear almost solid black from them ....

i have tried all the things that i can find. insectisides, double sided sticky paper.. even that thing with crisco that i heard somwhere... non of it has really worked. does anyone know how to solve this problem and or have any advice that i can try with this?

I did some checking and the only recommendation I can find is to hire a professional exterminator. Though, there is a beetle that is a predator of the Gypsy Moth...that might be something to look into. I just don't know the name...that might take some research.

the problem is to introduce a population thats not common to the area might cause more harm than good. besides what do i do, go to a pet store and ask for a box of 2000 Calosoma frigidum? lol i can just see the clerks face :)

eh... they get those kinds of questions all the time. :D

we have gypsy moth problems every once in a while here on delmarva but usually not too significant. sadly, i don't have any idea about how to get rid of the little bastards other than to suggest malethion (or however you spell it) on them when they're catepillars.

well the problem focuses around the caterpillars mostly, i am looing out the windows now and they are covering the trees... it's really disgusting. BTW what is malethion?

malethion (or malathion or mal-whatever-thion) is a pretty generic insecticide that kills a broad range of insects. i used to use it religiously on my apple tree because it was home to lots of grubs and caterpillars. you should be able to find it in any home improvement or hardware store. just dilute it in a sprayer according to the instructions and have at it.

i'm 99% certain it works for gypsy moth caterpillars but not sure how to treat for the actual moths since they're more mobile at that point. :D

This isn't going to help now, but here the counties and municipalities spray (aerially) in the spring to keep the Gypsy Moth population down. You might consider lobbying your county or city to do the same starting next year.

Have you considered a chat with your county agricultural agent? It doesn't matter if you're not a farmer--they help urban and suburban residents as well as Old McDonald with anything related to insect control, gardening, lawn and tree problems, or any related subject. Their advice is free, accurate (they're associated with the nearest Land Grant university and have access to mega-expertise), and usually highly effective. Best of all, they won't recommend anything that will poison your kids or get you arrested for violating some obscure law that you don't know about.

Your local agent will be in the "County Government" section of your phone book.
