A Lit charity auction

Hang on a minute lads. I've got an idea.

Since it is the season of giving, I'd like to suggest we do something for charity on the AH. Not the usual stunts of growing moustaches or posting threads, but by selling ourselves for cold hard charity cash.

There was an idea a long while ago on the BBC about a "Money can't buy" auction, where prizes that couldn't normally be bought for any amount of money were auctioned off. Wouldn't it be a good idea if we auctioned such things on the AH in return for donations to charities?

Like photos. Or signed stories/anthologies. Or audio recordings. Or having a story written specifically for you? Or having an illustration drawn of your favourite story? Or having a character named after you?

What do people think?

I think it's a good idea, but there'll probably be a good bit of organizing to do. I'll help with that, too, but have no idea where to start.

Well, I don't think it's that bad. Most charities allow you to donate online and will give oyu a "Thank you" e-mail, which can be forwarded if proof is required. We can set up a thread to announce our wares and the charity we want money to go to and bids can be via closed PM auction.

Us. I would bid for illustrations from some of the authors and I know there are people who might bid for photos and other such wares. Plus it'd all be charitable and v.v.good for the soul

We could even try and get some esoteric, forum specific ones, like Abs will be nice to the winner for a month (possibly a minute, depending on how long she can keep it up!), or making someone carry the signature/avatar of the winner's choice for a month?

As I understand you, this would be an auction of AHers selling themselves to other AHers. Since you would be in the AH forum and bidding is by closed PM, you would have to frequent the AH to find the auction and be a member to PM.

I think its a great idea. I'd certainly pay for an artist if I could send them a pic of myself and have them draw a picture of me getting laid for one of my stories.

I'm just not sure any of the great authors here would pay to have me use their name in a story.

Another thing that caught my fancy:

Well, I'm not sure if we could trust non-AHers with pictures, etc. Hence why I suggested keeping it internal.

TBH, it wouldn't be too much about the money. We could raise maybe £10 for each auction piece and maybe have ten auctions? That's £100 that our charities wouldn't have had and ten happy winners. All spreading the joy of Yule, Christmas, Hannukah, etc.

Earl will have to tell us - there is also a donation factor, where do we send it and how do we trust it? I know Earl and trust him, but not everyone does. I think this is a great idea if it gets worked out.

I think maybe asking Laurel about Lit's donations would be good? Just a thought.
