Comparing EU unemployment rates to the US is largely dishonest

Did you know the EU computes unemployment by something called U6 numbers, while the US computes it by U3 numbers?

United States U6 numbers are 8.9%.


U-3 Total unemployed, as a percent of the civilian labor force (official unemployment rate)

U-6 Total unemployed, plus all marginally attached workers, plus total employed part time for economic reasons, as a percent of the civilian labor force plus all marginally attached workers

One of the better posts I have seen on this site. The way US govt calculates unemployment is proof they dont care about unemployment. Just like your stats say there are huge numbers of people underemployed or unemployed and not drawing unemployment. Can only draw for 6 months. You have the long term unmemployed which is severe problem. Employers dont want to hire those people even if extremely well qualified because of perception they are lazy for not working at McDonalds and not an intelligent person to get to point of being long term unemployed.

Ayup. If you've been displaced for more than 6 months in your field of work you'll scarcely ever get another job in that field. If you worked at Mickey D's in the interim, however, you're pegged as a food service person, and you can still kiss a job in your former career goodbye.

Then you'll go to college to learn biotech and come out just in time to find they're offshoring biotech too.
