Help Desperately Needed for Animal Victims of Hurricane Katrina.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is transportation provided, with people ready and waiting, for upwards of 200 dogs and 150 cats so far rescued from the devastation of hurricane Katrina. What these animals need is a place to go. Kennels, boarding, vets offices, shelters with any extra space, foster homes and rescues. Even one or two open kennels would greatly help.

From what we know, all animals have been vaccinated and are in good health considering the conditions. There are dogs and cats of every breed and size. Some are in groups of two, three or four, hailing from the same family, while some are solitary. ANY KENNEL SPACE AVAILABLE CAN CERTAINLY BE USED. These drivers are willing to move these animals ANYWHERE they need to go. Absolutely anywhere.

The current safe houses for these animals are being inundated and some of these pets will have to be euthanized if they are not moved to make room for the incoming animals.

Please feel free to pass on this information everywhere. Every forum, every list, every community.

REMEMBER THESE ANIMALS WILL BE TRANSPORTED TO YOU.

If you know anyone, anywhere, that is willing to take in even one cat or dog, please have them contact Lynda at the information provided below.

They are also asking for ANY kind of donations for the animals - money, food, bedding, water, etc.

***

PM me for contact information. I'm taking one dog myself. Please help these pets, if you have any space at all, or if you know of anywhere they can go. Let's help these people by keeping their animals safe!

some people, like me, would like to help more but aren't in a financial position to do so. I don't have money to give or a place for the victims to go, but I do have a backyard and dog food, so someone's beloved pet won't have to be put to sleep.

What came to my mind was all the pet stores that were more than likely abandoned.

yes, and some of them are worried sick about their pets, no?

*shrug* think what you will.

In no way will I put animals as more important than people.

I'm trying to contact my mom. She's in southern Alabama. She maybe able to help.

It doesn't appear that carson is asking you to CHOOSE. Nor is he claiming that animals are more important than people.

He simply put it out there that there is an opportunity to show compassion to other living beings that are, for the most part, forgotten.

For those who can, it would be easier to take in a pet than a displaced person. The Salvation Army, Red Cross and numerous other groups are mobilizing to provide food, water and shelter for our countrymen. And your donations help tremendously.

But there aren't too many organizations set up to provide for our pets.

There is no need to belittle someone who feels compassion for the animals who have also survived the hurricane. I would imagine they are traumatized and in need of some tender loving care as well.

Why must it be fodder for ridicule?

Exactly my sentiment.

ridicule doesn't bother me. I'm not feeling belittled.

I've volunteered to take in a pet. I've also given money to the Red Cross and donated supplies both at the office and at home.

people are quick to judge. but i know that i would be out of my mind with worry over my pets, should this happen to me. taking in someone's pet so they might be able to get it back one day is all I can do right now to help. in a time like this, people cling to their pets as a lifeline. if their pet is euthanized, they will never, ever get it back. at least this way, there's a chance.

I hear you Carson. I sent to the Red Cross and have donated to the Humane Society. Of course humans are more important but I have compassion for other life too. An extra $50 wasn't too much to ask. :)

In any disaster, my cat is the first thing I would save. To then be told I couldn't keep her with me at a shelter, would just crush me. To then be told she would be euthanized because there was no place for her, would destroy me.

Thanks for posting this Carson.

If there are any general agencies or NGOs to contact for this, add them to the how to help in a disaster thread

i think it's just a group of people, actually. people who've donated their time and gas to transport these animals.

I think the last thing we would worry about would be some pets. Get the people out first man.

You don't get that by helping pets you ARE helping people.

I also would be worried sick about my pets. Obviously my kids and my family come first, but if I knew someone was caring for my pets and that I had a chance of getting them back, it would take a HUGE weight off my shoulders.

I'm not saying RESCUE pets before people, but why shouldn't volunteers do what they can for pets? Not everyone can be in helicopters plucking people off rooftops.

some people left the city with their pets...now they have no homes and no way to keep them.

do you tell these people who've lost everything that they've got to lose their pets as well?

for people with no relatives this might be the only thing they have left. :(

Firstly, please don't tell me what I don't get.

I can understand that you would be worried sick, as a pet owner, I can understand.

What I may not have communicated clearly is that I think until the people are safe, until families are reunited, it's not the greatest idea to start spending time on.

Why would they take pets away from people? I'm not following you.

if it isn't detracting from the human relief effort then why not
