Feather walked into the coffee shop looking for a bulletin board of some sort. Finding one she flashed a wide smile and stapled her sign on the board covering some other things up.

It was a vivid blue with a staight clear font on it.

It said:

The Music of the Soul.

Come audition at 163 Rogers Boulevard to join Ska band.

Bring your heart and soul.

Ask for Feather.

Auditions start on August 28 at 6 PM.

Don't call, just come!

It had steal drums on it in a fade type of graphic.

Feather grabbed a drink from the public fountain as she made her way across the park to a small grocery store. Soon this area of town would be littered with her small notices. She liked how it had turned out, it was only a 8 1/2 X 10 sheet but it looked pretty good.

Soon she had distributed the things at music stores, the mall , ice cream shops and even municipal poles.

Dancing her way back to the warehouse she seemed to almost glow.

Now to wait and see if anyone showed up.

----------------------------------

A week later there she was listening to man after man after woman flub their auditions. Didn't anyone come prepared? Did everyone think they were a star already? Did anyone have ears even?

A guy came up, she smiled at him. Feather told him he could start. Okay she thought, please let this one have something going on for real!

He slipped in with a couple of others. sitting near the wall. he wasn't much to look at on first glance. barely looked out of high school..if that. long hair tied out of his eyes with an emerald green bandana, he wore a black T-shirt that fit his form nicely and blu jeans with run down sneakers. when the current guy was done, he stood quietly...it was his turn.

he moved up to introduce himself. nearly tripping over a chair in the process and smacking another guy in the back of the head with the case he carried his bass in. mutterin apologies, he smiles quietly, almost nervously at Feather. God...he looked like he wanted to bolt. he didn;t ofer a name as he set up his Bass...he didn't look overly confident that he'd get the part in the first place...but hey...where's the harm in trying?

standing still for a long moment, he seemed to stare off into space, his fingers dancing across the strings without touching them, and then the half swing, half reggae tones began to fill the room, a bit of a Jazz undertone to them as he seemed to get lost in his own world.

There are some people in the world that have been compromised in life...they lack social graces but are top Surgeons, or they lack a moral conscience, yet can run a Fortune 500 company in their sleep...perhaps this ws the way with this boy? maybe what he lacked in confidence was compensated for in his music...then again...maybe he was just religious about practicing.

Feather began to really smile for the first time today. Listening to the boy who looked to be about the same age as she was, she began to move to his vibe. There was something about him. It was more than just the music. It was like what happened when she jammed with someone. There was a spark of energy of magic waiting to be tapped.

She stood up and motioned to him to continue. She walked up to where he was and began to play a steel drum set she had made herself and set up on the stage like area. Soon she was singing and dancing while the cutie in front of her continued his audition. This was working! Her spirits lifted.

Just when she was ready to give up on finding anyone for the band she had envisioned, here was someone that fit with her. Together they made music that spoke to them both. The warehouse was filled with sound that was magic. She could almost see the streams of colored energies in the air. People were vibing along with them.

Her thin skirt was whipping around her legs as she played and sang. Her cat like eyes bright and blue looking at nothing at all. Feather's wild blonde hair acted electrified.

This was cool! She was beginning to think her plan wouldn't work, to create a band and live off of it. She was not allowed to go home for at least two years. In the meantime she had to find a way to support herself and the only thing she wanted to do was make music, well, that and taste, feel, experience everything!

Finally they wound down and finished jamming for now. She went to him, hugging and kissing him exuberantly.

"That's great! I think we can so work together! What is your name? Mine is Feather. Come sit with me while we watch the rest of these guys do their thang. Whatchu say?" She said her accent was slightly Cajun flavored.

Her blouse had long sleeves that flapped with her movements. The sort of thing that a witch might wear or maybe it was more of a butterfly thing, depending on one's point of view. Her body was tight, long, lean and young. Her generous smile and bright eyes looked at him as she turned around when she reached the table waiting for him to speak and join her.

He binked as she spoke to him...whao...it didn't suck!?

smiling slightly nervously as he hugs the Bass to him, he chews on a fingernail. "Uhm....Jeremiah..most call me Jerry.". moving to sit with her, he smiles quietly as he looks at her. "You're really good...I thought I'd come check it out." he relaxed some now as he watched her, trying to keep his mind from wandering as he settled into a chair beside her, he watched some of the others. "You really liked it?"

Feather smiled at him.

"It totally was hot! I wish I had about four more of you on every instrument! This is exactly the sort of thing I am trying to build." She said sitting down.

"Okay Jerry it is!" She watched the next performer come up, nodded to her to start.

"Cute isn't she?" Feather whispered to Jerry.

She liked how nervous or shy he seemed to be. They watched the girl set up and Jerry spoke.

"You really liked it?" He asked.

"Sugah I don't front about music, that was magic baby!" She said laughing and hugging him again warmly, then she turned to watch the girl.

Returning the hug Nervously, he looked at the girl setting up and blushed as she revealed that her skirt probably belonged to her little sister as it dodn't quite do it's job to cover when all things were said and done. he nods quietly. "Yeah...she's cute."

He smiled and snuck another glance at Feather quietly from the corner of his eye as he shewed on a fingernail again.

"So...what's the name of the band gonna be?"

"Good Question Jer! I think the entire band should help with that. I like to give everyone a voice. I am going to be a benevolent dictator cause they are the best kind but I'm going to pretend it's a democracy." She said laughing.

"I'm seriously trying to be real here." She said. The girl started playing a fucking tambourine and doing what Feather supposed was her idea of singing. Feather put her hand over her eyes.

"Just shoot me now Jerry. I don't know how much more of this I can take." She whispered out of the corner of her generous mouth.

He smiles soflty and hides his mouth behind his hand as he murmurs. "maybe hire her as a back up dancer? Give her a belly button ring with a strobe light in it...it could be the band's hook." grinning a bit, he watched quietly then looked back to her. "I know a keyboard player if that would help."

Feather snickered at Jerry's idea for the girl who was pathetically impersonating a musician in front of them.

"Sure baby any friend of your's who is any damn good is a friend of mine!" She said leaning over into his ear. She smelled of sandalwood and jasmine.

"Okay! That's fine! Thanks! We'll call you if we decide to use you. Next!" Feather said.

A nice looking guy about 22 came up to the table and flashed white teeth. She grinned.

"Go ahead Crawgator show us whatchu got!" She said. She leaned again to Jerry. "I swear he reminds me of a gator in the bayou back home! Here use my phone to call your friend, please. I'm about sick of watching the delusionals."

Shiverng as he felt her breath against his ear, his eyes fluttered closed. He had a clean scent about him, neither masculine or feminine...just mainly of soap. a slight tremble flitted through his body, almost imperceptible and then he took her phone and dialed quickly after a few moment, he spoke quietly.

"Sammy...you gotta come down here and give this a shot...front lady is cool...and the talent here ain't much...trust me on this...you're in if you bring that thing down."

After a few more moments, he hande the phone back, a happy smile on his face. "Sammy's coming down...he's a bit of a nerd...just a heads up....rides a moped and thinks a mullet is cool....but he's got magic fingers when it comes to that keyboard he's got."

yeah..they were talking music...he had all the confidence he needed when it came to music.

"Dude I don't care bout his hair or anything else just what he can bring musically and that he is mellow. I don't need any high maintenance bitches to baby sit ya know? That ain't gonna work." She breathed in his scent with a grin.

Feather watched the man she had nicked "Crawgator" set up his 'tar. Silently praying he would be worth a damn. She had been at it all day and there weren't many left to see. Most had been sub par. If Jerry's friend was good that was two. She just needed a good axe man or woman and she could deal.
After that it was straight up rehearsal and finding gigs she planned on and the sooner the better.

He nods. "Nah. Sammy's cool....just...don't mess with his M&M's he doesn't like that at all..."

He settled back to watch the Gator and blinked. "That guy needs to spend time memorizing chords." he spoke quietly though so as not to offend. halfway through the guy's song, the door opened and a short Fat Hawaiian kid in a loud Blue shirt dragged himself in carrying a case as long as he was tall. looking around, he set the keyboard case down and popped a bag of M&M's in his mouth as he waited

Feather smiled seeing what had to be Jerry's friend come in. Turning back to "Crawgator" She put her hands in a time out position.

"Okaaaay! Cut it right there darlin. We will let you know, kay?" She said waving him off.

"Next?" A girl with a green fro hawk came up and smile.

"Hi! I'm Lauren? Ready for me?" Feather gave her a smile.

"Sure go show us what you can do!"

He shot a smile towards Sammy and then settled back to Listen to the girl.

the smile got wider as the girl began playing. "Now there is promise...as long as she doesn't break into Stairway to heaven or something."

Sammy Grinned as the girl started playing. kneeling on the floor, he opened his case and got it set up. turning the Volume down, he began jamming to the girl's music, be-bopping to the tune and making faces. it was comical...but he was also very very good

trying to keep a straight face, Jerry turns to Feather and nods. "And that...is Sammy."

"Yeah I like her!" Feather whispered leaning into Jerry again. Her gypsy like top gaping a bit showing him a flash of flesh that let him no what he might have suspected all along she was not wearing a bra of any sort. Feather grinned at first Sammy and then Jerry.

"Sorta figured that out honey! Tell you what? I think we got us some good roux going here!" She said. Again she got up and went to her steel drum set. She was humming at first and then started singing. Her brows went up looking at Jerry. Her expression clearly said, come on in honey the water is F-I-N-E!

He blushed a deep crimson at the flash of breast. trying to avert his gaze as his mind flashed through several mini fantasies on the spot.

As she began to sing, he smiled and picked up his guitar once more. striking a few chords, his fingers were soon walking the strings like a tight rope walking octopus.

Sammy grinned and popped a few more candies in his mouth and kept playing, soon the whole place was bouncing...a few of the smarter ones realized the Audition was over for them.

She felt happy and safe in the music. They had the ability to rift off of each other and come together in melody. It was a nice moment, one of the best she had experienced since leaving the plantation. Maybe she could take these people pull them together and make a family of sorts out of them. She opened her eyes in mid note and damned if she couldn't see their auras around them like full body halos. She blinked and grinned, holding that note before going on with her song. This was good shit here! This might just work!

She was in no hurry to stop. Her body flowed with the beat making her feel alive. Little prickles of energy traveling up and down her skin. Some of the people around them joined in or started dancing, others left. Yeah this was good!

Playing as long as the others Did, Jerry watched her, coming out os his shell, he was soon moving arund quietly, dancing to the music...it was good having a hip-portable amp.

Sammy's fingers danced across the plastivc keys and rubber buttons of the synthesizer. changing the sounds and tones with barely a thought he was having a blast

It took a while for them to wind down. It was like the music was bursting out of them. She grinned and continued until they were all tired and thirsty.

"Okay that was raw but it was great!" She said punching the air. Feather turned to the others there and bowed a bit to those who clapped.

"Thanks y'all! That concludes our auditions! Thanks for coming out!" Some groaned and others were ready to leave. One or two came up to plead their cases.

Soon enough they were alone.

"So y'all want to form a band?" Feather said with a smile. She grinned at them.

They nodded in unison. "Yeah...that rocked." Jerry smiled and retook his seat realizing that he'd been dancing again. "So...what do we call ourselves then?"

Sammy smiled and looked at the Mohawk girl. "and whoooo....is yooooou?"

"Sammy, Lauren, Lauren, Sammy and this is Jerry!" Feather said.

"A name...." She wrinkled her brow considering.

"How about The Skatations!" She broke up laughing. "No that's terrible!"

She looks at the others for suggestions.

"Jerry said something a while ago that sounded good to me what was it? Argh! I can't remember! Okay any ideas? Ska Nation? I have no idea!" She said giggling again watching Jerry and Lauren flirt. They were both so shy and so cute about it too.

Sammy smiled. "Charmed Lauren." winking at her he offered her a pack of M&M's. "OOOH! how about Hershey's kiss!?"

Jerry made a face. "How about Not? looking at the others, he shrugs. "Sammy claims he has low blood sugar.Hypoglycemia or something like that....I personally think he has 23 Sweet teeth."

Sammy grins...at least he had good teeth. "That could be a name..Sweet tooth?"

"Sweet tooth? Not bad!" Said Feather.

"How about what your poster said?" Lauren asked.

"What Auditions?"

"No Music of the Soul" Lauren said.

"Um, that's an idea. What about Solstice?" Feather countered. "You got any ideas Jerry?"

He thinks for a moment then nods. "Soulstice has my vote. I like it." nodding, he slipped the bandana from his head to run his fingers through black hair and then slipped the bandana on again. "but no wierd nicknames ok?"

"Cool! What do you think Lauren?" Feather asked smiling at Jerry.

"Ooh! I like it alright! At least until we think of something better."

"How about you Sammy? What do you think?" Feather said turning to him.

"It's okay but you know I like Candy better."

They all laughed a little.

"Okay how often can y'all rehearse?" Feather asked next. She knew she had nothing else to do for now anyway and she wanted to get the band tight as soon as she could then start booking gigs.
