Okay.

In the last three weeks, I've found this faulty logic coming from multiple Lit members, and it's time to nip this misconception in the bud.

*puts on Pomp & Circumstance tape, turns on fan in front of homemade American flag to make it wave*

*clears throat*

When someone "bashes" you for having an opinion (as posted in a thread), they are not curtailing your freedom of speech. Obnoxious as they may be, they are simply exercising theirs. It's not censorship by intimidation; if you feel it is, that's your problem, not theirs.

A thread, or a post?

If so, good. It's gonna take multiple instances to get this one through people's heads, apparently.

Really? How's the Queen of Forum Meltdown doing, anyhow?

Loveable scamp. :D

Un huh. But then it moves towards a kind of vigilanty movement.
I am ok with having other people discuss and disagree with me. I often disagree with others. It's when it turns into a bullying match that doesn't bode well.

The more typical thing is that people will try to stage a cyber-lynching by getting together a number of pals and trying to push the person with the different opinion off the thread by dint of sheer volume of insults.

On a more positive note, we all agree that Plasma should post a photo other than the one of the guy with the flabby butt.

That's true. And there's nothing wrong with that.

If people want to expose their weakness by depending on a virtual frat mentality to gang up on an opponent in order to defend their position, they certainly have a right to.

As the one being "lynched", I take pride in knowing I've hit a nerve and, most likely, have a point worthy of response. I don't start crying about being mauled by words on a forum.

You're all fricking morons and have your mouths stapled shut...

Yeah, even you!

But not you...

We'll need your mouth open for later....

you are so full of crap!
chapstick anyone?
please. Lynching of anyone is not aceptable. If you disagreee with someone have the balls to disagree alone. I fyou need a group then you should just keep quiet.
Bullying is what it is. So please, If there was a debate, a live debate with one person on eachside debating is it then ok for an entourage to get up and help defend the one side?
Didin't think so.

I disagree. Some people bring it upon themselves. They get what they deserve

Until everyone gets it into their thick heads that freedom of speech doesn't mean we're forbidden from tuning a person out or giving a dissenting opinion, this needs to be brought up every day.

No one's being lynched on this forum, or any other forum. Actually, using the word "lynched" in this manner undermines the literal term which, I assure you, means something far more distasteful, and should be acknowledged as such.

I agree. But, if they want to expose themselves, let them.

It happens all the time. Ask MLKjr or other great leaders if such responses made them feel weaker, or more empowered. Those who are secure in their convictions will not have issue with this.

posting is not a dialogue. if you put it on the board, it's open for all to respond. i get ganged upon. ultimately, though, it is the quality and not the quantity of the responses that matters. *shrugs* if i can't defend my position, i have no business hoisting it.

Well sometimes its not worth defending if you are just going to be flamed or the person/people are to stubborn to think outside the box.

I agree with your last statement. However ganging up on people no matter how strong your convictions is plain wrong.

I'll bet you the same people who gang up on others on forums also believe that being ganged up on is a form of censorship.

Nope. Well i don't actually.
Look if you have something to say, And i disagree, i'll say so. If i have any kind of proof to back me up i'll use it. I will debate you until either i change your mind or you change mine. Thats fine. I'ts great if 20 others come in and all disagree with me. It's the way it is. I object when the insults start. When the your and idiot crap starts. Thats when it becomes intolerable.
You have a right to an opinion so does everyone else.

Yes, it may be free speech, but sometimes folks are downright rude. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

morewickedfun said:

Why not?

Seems pretty obvious to me. People who don't feel they can stand on their own in a forum often join in with a "lynch mob" to go after someone else.

You all but agreed with that a few posts ago.

this is a discourse...
plain.
simple.

there is no abridgement
on free expression,
as it is,
if all participants
remain bound
by the same rules
or ethos.

as there are
owners
of this site,
then decidedly,
ultimate free speech
is
mitigated by their...
obligations,
requirements
and even whim.

yet, a semblance
of true free speech
exists here.

as long as there is free
and unfettered
discourse,
then...
just about anything goes.

and...
as all here
go by avatars
and alts thereof,
then
issues of libel or
slander
become even more
remote.

(poetic license?)

of all places
cyber,
this place
is more civil
and free
than most...

fuck all y'all!
