ok... the street i live on is slowly being overrun by stray cats. all they do is eat and make baby cats so the population is gonna go up exponentially if something doesn't change soon.

i've called the humane society and the maintenance crew around here and, while they're both attentive to the issue, no one has actually SOLVED the problem. i want them gone... not dead or abused, but gone.

there are a couple of neighbors who i'm sure are feeding them. i've tried talking sense into them about it but they are firmly of the belief that i'm the one who's wrong.

thanks for any suggestions on how to get rid of them legally.

You're always going to want to get rid of something, but truth be told, there will ALSO always be something coming to replace that.

My best advice, LEGALLY, is to just live with it.

LOL :) ... The title of your thread got my attention... As far as the kitty's, the only thing i know from experience, if you dont feed them they wont come around... If your neighbors decide they want to take on the responsibility of having a cat they need to see about getting them fixed... Also, if calling the humane society doesnt work (i can also say that never got me anywhere) you will probably have to catch the cats yourself and take them in...

Or maybe you can adopt a couple yourself? :catroar:

The neighbors? You could buy out their properties.

EJfan, we have some of the same problems here in Arizona, way to many cats and they always stick to certain areas. What the humane society does is they go out and catch most of the female cats in a certain area and fix them, then release them right back in the same area. They do this for two reasons, wild cats are a terror to try and domesticate, and most people won't take an adult cat, they almost all want kittens.

So to save on taxpayer money and medical bills for the staff, they fix the females. They can't go and kill the cats, they can only do that to something that causes a problem that puts someone in danger of their lives. Cat's don't fall into that category unless they are the big zoo cats, even then they try and drug it and return it to wherever.

If you can't get your neighbors to stop feeding the cats, they do make sound barrier systems, usually to keep away insects or keep an animal in the house, but the insect ones do bother cats, so buy several of those and turn them up all the way. The cats will not go into your yard for about 3 months if you don't manage to drive them away with the sound.

After 3 months they will start getting closer, as they get used to the sound. However those do have I believe different sounds they make to keep away different insects, so changing the sound anytime you see cats moving closer and staying should keep them away indefinitely.

Above is of course a theory, it may work it may not. Talk to your local pet store people they should know, or you could try one of those outdoor places, but I doubt they will know unless someone with pets is there.

First off, talk to the neighbors again and advise them the the county is aware of the problem, and that the solution they have to the problem is to kills the strays to insure you don't have a rabies outbreak. That might get them moving towards either adopting the cats they feed and geting them fixed, or stop feeding them...

Next...... Talk to the humane society and see if they can give you the names of trappers and groups who will trap these cats. None of them want to see the cats killed, which, as mentioned above, can happen if the county gets involved. A trap, a can of sardines in the trap and you will catch kitties...

If that does not pan out, then you must call your county in for some action.... Something I don't like, but may be the only choice you have.

You could, I suppose, call Animal Control - although they would probably just laugh at you.
In Rome, they have stray cats all over the place; living in the ruins of the colloseum, etc. I thought it was really cool, actually. :)
Hmm, and I don't really have anything else to say. Good luck.

Stray cats, Humane Society, Animal Protection

EJ

It is a shame that your neighbors enable the problem without taking responsibility and the cats in.

You say that you don't want them dead, but unfortunately the oximoron of Human Society and Animal Protection (HA HA) is that if they can't place them, they euthanise them! Some Protection!

Well, you could always hope that a Chinese Restaurant opens soon!! (OOPs did I really say that! Sorry)

(Men are like hardwood floors........lay them right the first time, and you can walk all over them forever!)

You could always become the crazy guy who sits on the poorch shooting cats, instead of birds.

great replies... thanks for the help... lemme elaborate some...

on one visit, the humane society came 'round and managed to grab a single cat. three days later the neighbor came and asked me if i called them, i said i did and she lit into me because i caused her cat to be hauled away. so i told her to call the humane society. she did. then she came back crying because they euthanized her cat. i felt bad but it took her 2 or 3 days to notice the piece o' shit was missing and it really wasn't her cat... just a stray she was feeding. i tried to explain how feeding strays w/o getting them medical attention was a health problem and she was risking the lives of every animal around by doing so. she didn't understand.

PERSONALLY, i don't care if the cats live or die. i'd rather they were given good homes but if they can't be domesticated or taken care of properly then i think they should be put down. this isn't a wide open area here... it's a development and we all have to share the space to some extent. i'd love to buy the whole fucking place to be honest... but that's just not realistic.

i'm just so tired of seeing the damned things in my yard and walking down the street like cattle... and that fucking/rape sound they make in the middle of the night annoys the shit out of me. it doesn't have to be like this but i live amongst morons. how do i keep them away from my house????

i have a small dog... he hates cats but i won't let him near them because he'd eat them or die trying. i don't want him to get sick from whatever disease they might have.

EJFan, I completely understand where you're coming from on this issue.

When my husband and I got married, we ended up with a blended cat family. Right now we have five cats (it was seven until recently, when some stupid dog attacked two of them). They're all outdoor cats. They've all been fixed, and they all hang around the house.

However, because we live on a small township road, cats get dumped near our house, and because we're already feeding outdoor cats anyway, we get interlopers pretty regularly. Right now we have two of them; fortunately both are male, so while they're still contributing to cat overpopulation, they're not giving birth to feral kittens in our garage.

A couple of summers ago, someone dumped an 8-week-old purebred Siamese kitten in our driveway. We were pretty aggressive about trying to find her owner, because we figured that a cat like that HAD to have wandered from someone's house. Nobody claimed her, and she's been a lovely pet--NOT your stereotypical Siamese cat.

I think, like emap said, that trying to trap the cats, spay/neuter them, and release them is a good start, but this can be time-consuming and expensive. Some areas with veterinary schools let their students practice spaying and neutering on these cats, so that cuts down on veterinary costs.

Stray cats often aren't healthy. Some of the ones who have shown up at our house have given our cats respiratory infections that we've had to have treated with antibiotics. The very sickest ones will be put to sleep if/when they're caught.

What it boils down to is the fact that some people are irresponsible pet owners. They can't/won't get their pets spayed/neutered, and then when the inevitable litter of babies comes along, they discard them like yesterday's garbage.

Unfortunately, I don't have any real advice for you. I'm just being Wendy Windbag. :)

it's ok eilan... i'm glad to know that i'm not the only one who grasps the full gravity of this particular annoyance.

i've tried vinegar and cayan pepper to keep the out of the yard... it works but only for a day or two. that kinda makes it cost prohibitive as a regular method.

I am being a smart ass here, but... this WILL work.

Go buy some COSMIC CATNIP from your local Petsmart or Pet Supermarket... It needs to be Cosmic Catnip... get a large container, walk by all of your neighbors houses who feed the cats, and pour scoops of the catnip on their walkways, stairs, porches, etc... The cats will be attracted to the catnip and won't come near your place..

Ravin.... 30 lashes with a wet noodle for your suggestion... Shame on you.. ;)

you have no idea how, on some days, i wish i could do this... can't fire a weapon here though... homes too close together.

One of my friends was having a the same problem in her neighborhood...and unfortunately it became her problem when she and her silly soft heart decided to feed the poor things.

Anyway, I read through this thread, but I don't know if you said if you have any cats or not, but if you do, you should get them checked by a vet immediately. One of the major problems associated with outdoor cats is the propensity of them contracting Feline AIDS, a disease that reacts the same way in feline bodies as it does in human bodies. It is easily transferable and contractible through sharing water/food, fighting, and nursing. As I said, if you have cats, it is in my opinion, important for you to get them checked at a vet, there is a vaccination to prevent them from contracting the disease, but even with the vaccination there is still like a 65% chance your cat with end up with AIDS.

That said, what my friend ended up doing was going to the local humane society and borrowing/renting an animal trap from them. It's a lot of responsibility to take seeing as though if you want to get rid of them all it will probably take a few weeks as well as numerous trips to the humane society, but since she started catching them about a month ago, the number of cats that used to be outside her door have dwindled from 5 to 1 and overall when I drive through the neighborhood, there are less cats outside in general.

She also just wrote a quick, informative letter to her neighbors which she just stuck in their mailboxes telling them about the dangers of letting your cat outside, the increased risk of them contracting AIDS, getting hit by a car, getting attacked by an animal bigger than them, getting pregnant, etc. It's a lot of work, and rather time consuming, but like I said, the number of cats I see outside have rapidly decreased.

Hope this helps...

Here is a link to a commercial place offering solutions. Then here is a gardening forum with a few solutions, several I would think of trying more than halfway down the page so don't just read the top. <hint>

Ezzy thanks, I never knew there was a ultra sound pet boundary. :rose:

EJfan go to that first link and look up the ultra sound pet barrier that's the same thing I talked about with the insect ones, but probably works better. ;)

Get the biggest, meanest and most territorial cat you can find and keep it as a pet, then enjoy the sight of all the other cats clearing the hell outta of area.

I use to live on a farm and we had tons of cats... they would get real friendly and then we'd put free cat/kitten ads up and people would come flocking for them so if you get the kittens you can always up an ad up and people would be happy to get a free cat...

to keep them out of you yard make sure you don't have anything out that they'll eat... dog food, scraps, even potato peelings... my barn cats eat everything... having neigbors that feed them should keep them away... and another idea is to leave them alone or squirt them with water if they come on ur property... oh they also make sprays and have plants that you can buy that repel different animals... good luck

I personally detest the beasts. But I am also tender hearted. What I have done, is got a "live trap" one where they walk in and the door closes on them. I baited them with a little tuna. And in the morning I would take the cat in the trap to the human society. Even the ones with collars on them. I took in 14 one week alone. Usually after a couple of weeks I don't have a problem. By the way, I rented the trap from the humane society.

People who think that everyone should love thier pet are obnoxious. Not only am I allergic to cat dander, but they dig and crap outside my front door in the flower bed. That majorly ticks me off. One neighbor had the gall to complain to me that she had to bail her cute little pussy out of kitty jail twice. The second time she paid a big fine. I told her to take care of her owm pets, and that made her even more mad....geeze
