A bloody good idea

Someone mentioned jokily on the POD thread about collaborating on a book of erotica and it got me thinking.

What if we were to collate a group of short stories from our works and try to get them published as an anthology of erotica. A lot of us don't have enough to publish an anthology on our own, but we are all fairly expert and I'm sure that between us we could probably get a quality story or two in every kink known to man. I have very little experience with publishers, but that which I do have seems to return the intelligence that they're constantly looking for good erotica anthologies. How about it?

Good idea, bad idea?

Sounds like a good idea to me too...

but i don't have a clue about publishing either!

Like I said on that thread, I'm intrigued by the idea.

I'm sure one or two of my stories would be appropriate for publishing.

And we have lots of other good writers here.

It's going to be a matter of trust, and money, to get it off the ground.

I am congentially disorganised, so I couldn't arrange it, but I know of tons of stories that deserve to have their name up in lights. Yui's incest one that starts with the chocolate is the first to spring to mind and there are hundreds more soon after.

I know Laurel and Manu publish a Lit book, but I think there are a lot of unsung authors who could easily fill a publishable anthology if we worked together.

Where's a natural-born leader when we need them?

I am interested -- however, not in the money aspect AT ALL. In fact, I'd be MORE interested if we selected a charity/cause for any "revenue" to go to.

I'm a natural leader.. but unfortunately not interested, due mostly to my writer's block, but still..

irrelevant to this thread!

Already got it, shall get to it as soon as I can.

You guys might want to consider PublishAmerica. They're a POD outfit, the biggest, I think, and as far as I know, they have no upfront costs whatsoever. They take a piece of whatever you sell, and that's how they make their money.

They also help you with editing and design (I think), which is unusual for a POD with no upfront fees, and I think they'll publish pretty much anything: fact, fiction, anthologies.

I might be wrong, but most legitimate anthology publishers seem to have their own source of stories. (By "legit" I mean that they pay the costs of production and marketing.) They'll have a pay site, say, and they'll run the stories there and then collect the best of them for hard-copy sales as a "Best of" collection. That's what Lit did.

Anyhow, it wouldn't hurt to email some publishers and inquire. They'll probably take forever to get back to you, or not get back at all, but e-mail's free.

Okay -- so someone propose a format ... multivolume set by genre? How many stories per volume? Cross-genre volumes? What?

I was thinking we should set it in Abs.

Authours sitting around drinking, using it to segue into each story.

I'd say we'd be looking at an anthology with a mix of genres in it simply because we've all got our strengths in different story sections...

I'm willing to compile all this -- I mean, collect the Word files, juggle the stories by volume, build a table of contents, etc. -- into a manuscript (or six). However, I won't be editing anyone's work but my own.

Someone else can find the POD publishers, create a thread with links to their submission guidelines, hammer out the "rules" (AHers only? One submission per author? Category? Author bios?)

well we need to see how many folks would be interested first before we make it AH only or whatever...

I'm no good with organisation but I volunteer to wipe brows, calm tempers and keep things motoring...basically i'll be the happiness fairy *LOL*

To make the volume as sellable as possible, some criteria would have to be set for what was put into the anthology (at least in my opinion). Would there be some kind of voting among the AH or some kind of volunteer board to read and select the best stories among those who want to participate?

I'll help with this as much as I can. I'm not publishable myself yet, but I think it's a great idea and I'm more than willing to support my fellow writers in the endeavour.

i think we have to look at all stories as you suggest and put together the creme de la creme which means folks will have to decide whats great and whats not. some kind of anonymous poll might work for that do you think? then folks can say yay or nay without fear of upsetting a friend.

I think we need some kind of theme so a person buying the book would have an idea what to expect...

My uncle works for a publishing company.

Get them together and I can see if I can get them to do it. I'd have to find out the costs, or if they'll pay... I have no idea how it works.

An anonymous poll would be good I think. It seems like it would be easiest to decide on a theme once the stories were picked. After they're compiled, it would be easier to see what they have in common or how they can be put together.

Cool idea. Instead of putting critic reviews on the back of the book, you can include PCs :)

Now seriously, why do you guys need consensus on what stories need to be included. Consensus is an inherently difficult problem when multiple parties are involved. Why not have a bunch of people who are friends pool their stories together and try to get them published. Any voting / deservability scheme seems doomed to me.

My $0.02

Okay -- how about an AH Anthology nominations thread you can post the LINK to a story you want to be included (your own or someone else's) in the anthology. Once we've collected all the nominations, I can post poll(s).

I can see your point. My concern was that if an open call was put up on the AH for stories to go in an anthology, some writers who aren't as polished would want to be included. I can easily see alot of lurkers and new writers wanting the glory of being published and pushing to get their story in. How would that be dealt with? Would every person who wanted to be in and every story recommended be put in the anthology?

Great idea !!

I know none of my stories are worthy, but still willing to see what my uncle can do for you guys.

:)

I think it's a great idea and would like to be a part of it.

I like the idea of posting polls and whatnot to round out the bulk of things, but I imagine the publisher would toss anything sub-standard. Wouldn't they?
