"The Dawn of the Fall"

As usual Marks plans hadn't worked out and he was going to have to spend the break between Fall and Winter quarter in the deserted dorms. The dining halls were all clsoed, and Mark was going to have to go out for meals but at least it was a nice time of year. the grand old trees around the Universty were turning gorgeous shades of bright reds, oranges, and yellows. And the beautiful old campus with its picturesque brick building seemed peaceful and relaxing despite the gargoyles which loomed menacingly overhead on the corners.

The leaves had been raked and it was a calm sunny day with only a few clouds adding interest to the light blue fall sky. The sound of birds was the only sound to be heard. The first snow had yet to fall.

Mark was sitting on a park bench on the side of a small lake in the University arboreatum watching the ducks wash themselves in the water. It was strange, the plain white envelope had just been lying there on the floor next to the door. It was in Marks coat pocket and he felt a mixture of emotions about opening it. It was probably just a note asking him to lock the dormitory doors when he went out, or something like that.. But maybe it was something more. Did he have a secret admirer?!

Nervously Mark tore the envelope open and saw a neatly folded piece of expensive beige stationary. The Resident Advisors never used stationary! Taking a deep breath he pulled it out and unfolded it with care. On the top was a legendary crest; A powerful looking lion seated with two women standing on either side holding spears. The women were dressed in Roman style robes and were very shapely.

The note read:

"You are cordially invited to the Amazon Societies Fall Ball. Your escorts will arrive at your place of residence at 8pm sharp. Dress appropriately.

XXX

The Amazons"

Mark had heard the rumors about the Amazons. They were a mythical underground Sorority, or a secret female society. Nobody knew much about them, where they met, or even if any such group really existed.. But it was a very big University, around 35,000 students, so anything was possible.

Mark just sat there looking at the lake for a little while unable to believe the note. Was this somebodies idea of a joke? He could get dressed up, but where would they take him? And could he trust them? Mark sure didn't want to get left stranded naked on some country road in the middle of the night, or worse...

Mark couldn't decide for sure what he wanted to do so he headed into town and got a sandwich and a cup of coffee at Starbucks. the coffee gave him a boost of confidence and by the second cup he had decided that he was going to go for it. If they were for real it could be quite an experience, even if a bit scary!

Mark milled around town, finally got a third cup of coffee, and headed back to the dorms. He don't know where the time had gone but it was getting late! It was already six o'clock. He grabbed by best kwaki slacks and a good white dress shirt and rushed and took a shower. Mark blow dried his hair, it looked good. He sat nervously on the edge of his bed and waited.

Mark watched the clock with growing anxiety as it approached eight. Almost the second the clock struck eight there came a soft knocking at his door. Shaking a little Mark opened it. There stood two girls in long grey robes with hood that covered their heads. Mark couldn't tell much about them because of the Mardi Gras masks they wore that hid their faces.

"Sorry but for reasons of secrecy you must wear this hood to the Ball", one of the girls said producing a black cloth hood. She shid the hood over Marks head so that he couldn't see a thing. Then she took his hand tenderly and led him out of the room.

"Don't worry I'll get the light and the door." The other girl reassured. Mark wasn't worried he had a set of keys in his pocket.

Mark felt the cool air outside as they walked him to a car. The car ride was long.

The traffic sounds, and the sound of a train passing by, made Mark realize that they were in a big city. Then he was guided out of the car. He heard a heavy door being opened in front of him. He was guided inside, then the heavy door closed loudly behind him.

They went down one flight of steps and then another. Down, down they went - five or six flights of stairs? Then he heard another very large heavy door open. He was guided forward, and he heard the door close.

"You guys are a little early." he heard a girls voice say laughingly to his left side.

The hood was removed and Marks eyes began to focus. He had to catch his breath. They were standing on the edge of an absolutely huge gothic cathedral styled room. Huge stone pillars on the sides stretched up perhaps a hundred feet or so to a lavishly carved vaulted ceiling. Grotesque gaqrgoyles perched menacingly on the tops of the some of the pillars. And to their right and to their left were two huge seated stone lionesses which must have been fifteen feet tall. Fantastic gothic, ancient looking, chandeliers hung down and softly lit the room. The floor was covered with low red carpeting.

A number of huge banners hung down along one of the walls and bore the Amazons crest as well as several others. Across the room from the banners a large curved staircase that wound on up to a second level.

There were perhaps three hundred robed figures talking in hushed voices on our level.

"Welcome to the Amazons ball" one of his escorts said with an odd smirk on her face. Mark sensed a vague familiarity but could not place it.

Mark -- 6'2" dirty blond hair. Lifts weights, looks like an athlete, but has never played any sports. He's a bit shy and a bit of a loner since he moved from California out to the mid-west to attend college. It seems to be taking him a while to make friends.

One of the hooded figures turned slowly on a heel upon hearing the doors open and then close. Honey colored eyes peered out from the oranate black mask covering half her face, a soft smile tugging at the corners of her soft pink lips at seeing Mark trying to focus on the surroundings around him.

The robed figure moved toward him slowly, nodding gently to both of his escorts as she slowed to a stop before the 6'2" blonde whom she recalled from his photograph.

"As I'm sure you've heard- Welcome to the Amazons Ball."

Her voice was smooth and even, and a touch deeper than the voices of his escorts. The small smile grew a bit more, a soft light of amusement shining in her eyes as she motioned with a grand sweep of her hand towards the bar in the far back. Which was being tended by two more hooded and masked figures.

"Would you care for something to drink?"

There was soft music playing in the background, the hooded figures milling around in small groups here and there as their conversations were kept in low, hushed conversational tones.

Mark

"Sure..." Mark agreed nervously.

His heart pounded as he studied the masked, but beautiful, figure in front of him. Her eyes sparkled mischevously and her lips curled into a simper of a smile.

A mild wave of fear mixed with excitement swept over Mark as he stood trying to focus his blury eyes and balance his shaky legs (An aftereffect of the sensory deprevation caused by the black velvet hood he'd worn on the way over).

Mark felt engulfed in the depths of the cavernous room and intimidated by the mysterious robed figure in front of him. But he found himself moving forward across the room, following..

"No need to be shy, Mark."

Pink lips held the smile as she lead him towards the bar, walking three steps in front of him. And although she was speaking softly, her voice carried very well over her shoulder.

"What would you like?"

Turning around slowly her warm, honey colored, eyes roamed over him slowly before flickering back to his face- in which she seemed to study quite intently. The only things visible, aside from her eyes, hands and half her face from the mask, her toes were seen as well as she seemed to be wearing high heels as she stood at the height of 5'7" easily. Her hair was also contcealed by the hood of her robe, leaving him to guess of what she really looked like and if he may have seen her before... because it seemed she had obviously seen him.

Rick

As Mark followed across the red vibrant carpet he noticed that she was wearing high heels and he could just make out the seductive curve of her hips under the robe.

Mark had caught a glimpse or two of those sparkling mischevous honey colored eyes. And those soft lips....

"What would you like?"

"Ohh.. uhh" Mark took a breath.

A couple hooded figures were tending the beautiful mahogany bar. It seemed to be stocked with every conceivable liquor. Mark found the bizarre Mardi Gras masks that the barkeeps were wearing intimidating.

"What you would recommend?" Mark said finally. "I don't know much about drinks."

"What you would recommend?"

He still seemed rather uneasy, though not as much as he had been just a moment ago, she could see and sense this very well. She bit down against her bottom lip gently, letting it curl out slowly as if in thought as her eyes remained trained on him until she turned to gain the attention of one of the bartenders with a snap of her fingers.

Beckoned, one of the masked figures strolled over easily and leaned down against the dark wood of the bar, their own eyes peering out at the two before them before the simple words of "What can I get you?" were heard.

"I'll have an Apple Martini."

The figure nodded obediently before wandering off to get her drink as the woman's attention turned back to the man at her side with an arch of her brow.

"Depends on what you want. Vodka? Bourbon? Brandy, perhaps? Rum... Scotch... Gin... Tequila..."

Mark

Vodka? Bourbon? Brandy? Rum? Scotch? Gin?

Marks roommate had cautioned him to be careful if he were ever at a party and offered a drink.

The robed bar keep prepared the apple martini with a flourish of style and skill, then turned to Mark.

"And what can I get you?"

"Do you have an iced tea?" Mark asked nervously. An "iced tea", one of the few drinks he knew the name of, and it sounded like a pretty safe drink.

"Yes, as a matter of fact we make a VERY special Long Island Iced Tea". The bar keep answered pridefully.

The eyes of his mysterious companion widened and she gazed at Mark with curious amusement, "Starting with the hard stuff?"

"Oh no, I'm used to iced teas." Mark feigned confidence "I drink them all the time."

A drink as innocent as an "iced tea" couldn't possibly be as strong as a "martini" Mark thought with satisfaction.

Her eyes widened in amusement, nodding gently before turning to the bartender.

"Long Island Iced Tea it is then for my guest."

The bartender nodded as he slid the Apple Martini her way before moving off to make Mark his drink as ordered. Slender, lithe, fingers wrapped around the stem of her glass before raising it to her lips as she took a measured sip.

"Tell me, Mark, why so uneasy?"

The question spoken so fluidly that her lips seemed to barely move around the words as she reguarded him with a curious look.

Mark

The steady penetrating gaze of those exotic beautiful eyes left Mark momentarily at a loss for words. The long lashes flicked and the honey colored eyes seemed to disappear behind dark growing pupils.

One second Mark was seated on the bar stool, the next second he found himself standing, helpless, his engorged member stretching his pants tight.

"I don't know... You're beautiful.."

His hand reached and caressed her left shoulder as she moved her face closer to his.

"I'm sorry.." Mark gasped pulling back from her.

Her eyebrows raised in amusement. She took another sip and motioned with her eyes to Marks drink on the counter.

Her gaze flickered down to the hand that caressed her shoulder before he pulled it back abruptly as if he had been burned.

"I'm sorry..."

"No, it's quite all right. Don't beat yourself up over it."

She smiled from over the rim of her glass as she took another well measured sip, motioning down to his own drink with her eyes before they flickered back up to him as he seemed to take the drink hesistantly.

"It's not going to bite you, Mark."

Slender fingers released the stem of the Martini glass as she set it aside on the bar before reaching out to take the iced tea and hold it out to the man before her. Eyes calculating and continuing to gauge him from behind the dark mask.

Josie

Josephine (Josie for short)-- curvaceous, with auburn waves and deep green eyes, sweet and inexperienced but with a curious nature

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Josie's gaze followed Mark as he crossed the room with Anastacia and took a seat at the bar. He had not noticed her, but she of course had not expected him to. How could he? She was just one of the many cloaked figures, the top half of her face hidden by a dark purple mask. The only thing that could have possibly given her away were the few rebellious stray curls that framed her face and peeked out from beneath the hood of her cloak.
She had recognized him the moment he had entered the room, even before the hood had been lifted off of his head. They had shared a literature course together the previous quarter, and she usually found herself sitting behind him in the lecture.
Carefully she made her way across the crowded floor with slow and fluid steps. Reaching the bar, she gracefully took a seat.
"I'll have a Bellini," she said in a smooth mezzo to the bartender.
Skilled hands quickly made and served her the drink, and she took a sip from the Champagne flute.
"Hello Mark. I see my sister here has already had the pleasure of welcoming you to our ball."
The corners of her full rose lips turned up in a pleasant smile.
Mark
"I'm Mark"
Mark held out his hand.
A titilated look raised on her face. "Yes I know... That's what I said."
She took his hand softly in hers and shook it playfully.
"I was just asking Mark why he's so uneasy here." his robed companion smiled.
Mark took a casual sip of his drink. "Ack..ack!" he choked as his drink bit back.
"Erm.. Good! I like a strong drink." Mark said, robustly pounding his chest with his hand. "I've just never had a chance to try one..." he grinned sheepishly.
"I heard the Amazons were a myth.." Mark began ackwardly. He paused and gingerly took a second tiny sip.
Josie laughed lightly at the joke, her emerald eyes sparkling with amusement. She crossed her longs legs, hidden under her robe, and rested her free hand upon her thigh.
"I heard the Amazons were a myth.."
"Well as you can see we are completely authentic...but just out of curiosity what exactly have you heard about us?" she said taking another sip of her drink.
She recognized automatically who those sparkling green orbs belonged to, a little smile tugging at the corner of her lips.
"Yes, what have you heard about us?"
Anastacia already moving to position herself next to her robed Amazon sister, having reclaimed her drink that was held between those slender fingers as she took another drink. Mark was amusing to say the least but very attractive, his nervousness would fade. Eventually.
Honey hued eyes watched as he seemed to stammer over his words once more, trying to form them into sentences. He obviously knew something about them but he seemed to be rattled to the core to be in their presence.
"Still uneasy."
The words spoken softly to herself and to the inside of her glass, Josie no doubt hearing her as she casted a sideward glance at her.
Alex
“Why not” Alex had asked himself as he read again the ornate note he had discovered that had been slipped under his dorm room door. He had looked at the envelope again. It was addressed to him Alexander Huntington, Room 202. There was no mistake, the invitation inside was for him...But why? Nobody had ever invited him to parties much less one put on by a sorority. And ...the Amazons! He had heard about them but wasn’t even sure they existed. Much like the Greek Amazon Myth they seemed to exist only in mans imaginations. His curiosity had been piqued to be sure and there was no reason to not accept.
Escourted... the note had said, maybe it was just a joke. He’d soon find out. It was seven-thirty his ecourt would arrive at eight, if in fact one did arrive he had little time to get ready. A quick shower later and a glance in the mirror as he had combed his wavy dark brown hair and adjusted the collar on his shirt. He had smiled back into a tan face and deep penetrating dark brown eyes and said to himself. “Your not bad looking Alex but you’re still a geek, if indeed this is a real party try to have a good time.” The knock at the door had made him glance at his watch 8:00... could it be? He had taken a deep breath and opened it.
Now, after having the hood removed and as he gazed around him at this mysterious place he had been taken to, he was even more curious. The atmoshphere was surreal, someone had gone to great pains to create a scene that was of another world. A world of hoods and masks and mythical possibilities.
Alex headed for the bar. He didn’t really need a drink, he just needed to sit down and think about all this. “ A glass of red wine.” he said when the masked bartender approached.
“To Xena” he said raising his glass toward two masked ...."Amazons perhaps". He thought... and a guy he recognized from Greek history.
Mark
"What have I heard? Well.." Mark said "I've heard that the Amazons are a secret Sorority. And I've heard some crazy stuff.."
Mark crinkled his forehead as if in thought.
"I've heard that if you watch closely at school you can tell who the Amazons are because they are the top students, the best looking, the best athletes.."
Mark took a breath.
"But I've never heard about the Amazons actually holding "Balls"... And I never thought I would actually meet the Amazons! Of course I don't know who you really are.."
Josephine
Josie chuckled at the 'Xena' comment made by the younge man who had just joined them at the bar.
"Hello stranger, welcome to our ball." she told him, but her attention went back to Mark when she heard him finaly answering the question that she and Anastacia had asked him earlier.
"I've heard that if you watch closely at school you can tell who the Amazons are because they are the top students, the best looking, the best athletes.."
"Oh stop it, you'll make me blush." she said jokingly.
...Of course I don't know who you really are.."
"You can call me Josie." she told him with a playful wink. She didn't see the harm in telling him that much, they didn't really know one another and in their liturature class the professor had always adressed her as "Miz Geller" (her last name).
Anastacia
Also hearing the "Xena" comment, she turned her head in regards to Alex and smiled softly to him with a hint of laughter.
"Xena? I love to wear leather as much as the next person, but that's a bit too far."
The air in her voice showed she was teasing as she dropped Alex a wink from behind the mask she wore. Hearing Josie give her name her eyes were on her, the stare showing that the point of the ball was that to be anonymous. So much for that. Eyes flickered away from Josie and towards Mark and she smiled that sly smile.
"Enjoy yourself, I'll be right back. Excuse me."
Robed head bowed in respect to them both before she was sliding past Mark, barely coming within an inch of touching him miraculously.
"Another Apple Martini for me, please."
Giving the bartender a little smile before she looked over at Alex, bowing her head to him in the same respectful gesture.
"Welcome to the Amazon's Ball. I hope you're enjoying yourself."
Josie noticed the look Anastacia gave her, making her regret giving Mark her name.. even if it was only a nickname. It was her first year in the sorority and she was still getting used to all the rules involved in being an "Amazon."
Alex
"Welcome to the Amazon's Ball. I hope you're enjoying yourself." Alex heard her say and if he hadn’t been he was now. Just the way she had said it, respectful but with a hint of intimacy that led him to believe that she was interested in him as a person and not just another guest. Her teasing wink from beneath the mask was an invitation to tease back but he decided to play it cool and figure out where she was coming from first.
The element of secrecy intrigued him and he was curious about what the Amazons societies purpose was. He knew better than to make some rude comment about female supremacy or some snide remark like ‘chicks rule’. Fortunately his flippant salute had been treated with humor so he backed off.
"Yes I am." he replied even if her question was rhetorical. “Are you the one I should acknowledge for the invitation to this ball. If so ...” he lightly touched the back of her hand feeling there was no need for introductions but that some form of physical tribute should be made. Obviously she preferred not to be identified and she must already know who he was. ...” thank you.”.
He turned to gaze approvingly around the room. Several guests had begun to dance and there was an air of revelry and celebration. Those that weren't dancing were engaged in lively conversations. It appeared that the ‘Amazons’ were doing their best to keep the tempo upbeat.
Mark knew Alex from Greek history but had always felt a little competitive with Alex because he and Alex were the top students in the class.
And now Alex was getting attention from.. well... from whatever her name was!
"Mmmm.."
A girl brushed up against Marks back and moaned teasingly. Mark was starting to feel veerrry relaxed but a little unstable in the chair.
Josie sipped her drink and smiled at him. 'Josie'...where had he heard that name before?
"I think you're beautiful!" Mark said suddenly.
"Why thank you." Josie laughed, "Would you like another drink?" Josie asked.
"Sure!"
Mark gulped down the last of his 'ice tea'.
Josie gestured over to the bartender who quickly walked over to their side of the bar. Taking up their empty glasses the hooded woman patiently waited for further instruction.
"I'll have another of the same." Josie said, "And the gentleman here will have... Mark do you want another Long Island Iced Tea, or would you rather try something else? Perhaps something not quite as strong?"
She could tell by the way that he was slightly swaying in his chair that he was not exactly experienced when it came to drinking. Which was pleasantly refreshing for her, because she had grown tired of frat boys and their keggers a long time ago.
Mark
"How about an Apple Martini?" Mark smiled.
"Comin right up." The bartender nodded enthusiastically.
"I've never had an Apple Martini!" Mark laughed.
Josie looked at him strangely and smiled.
"Do you dance?"
"Sure. I took a ballroom dancing class last year." Mark said pridefully.
"Awww... You'll have to show me your moves after you finish that drink!" Josie smiled.
