This is serious. Way more serious than people understand. This particular version of the virus they think originated in bats...transferred to snakes...and then to humans. Never has a virus gone from warm...to cold...back to warm blooded creatures. This means the mutational rate is astronomical...making it not only tough to predict, but to combat. The virulence of this in humans is something we have not seen in 400 years. It appears, it is transmittable without the carrier being sick. That means, if I am exposed, there is a 2 week incubation period before I show symptoms...14 days...and for 10 of those days...I can give it to you.

We are fortunate...the mortality rate is not extreme...5 to 10 %...but because of the mutational rate...this is a flip of the coin as to whether it gets less...or worse.

Am I afraid? Not in the way you think. There is nothing anyone can do to prevent it. If you are exposed...you will get it. Period. But yes, I am worried our Govt is not prepared.

How do you prepare if this thing goes bad real fast?

With a two week lead time by the time we find out if it's oh fuck time it 's to late!

There is nothing we can do. One needs to understand, the only way a human can fight any virus, is through antibodies we make once exposed. If there was a vaccine...you get it...you get kinda sick...but you create enough antibodies, that if exposed to the real thing...you fight it sooner and more effectively. One problem, we have no vaccines for any coronavirus. Not MERS. Not SARS. Not this. Since this virus is new...never seen in humans previously, no humans have antibodies to be immune. It will run its course.

Will a mask work? No. Probably not. Why? If this is truly airborne transmission, the virus is smaller than the pores on any mask. What does the mask stop? If you sneeze or cough, you expel water droplets...spit...sputum...and the virus will adhere to that. This is not Ebola...where a mask will provide protection.

A typical mask can be a nice warm, damp environment to keep the damn thing alive.

Most viruses dont like the cold, so one would think Alaska would not have many cases if this does blow up. But surprisingly, transmission rates can be unexpectedly high in cold climates because a human body is warm and that is where it is living. And people congregate more in cold weather.

I would not fly under any circumstance right now until more is learned. Next place to avoid... hospitals. This may be nothing but the equivalent of a flu. But the possibility is very real this can be very bad for kids, old people and those w compromised immune systems. We will know so much more in a week.

There is still viable 1918 flu virus in the frozen ground at Brevig Mission.

There is more than just that. It will be an interesting decade as the permafrost thaws.

We store many viruses in a -80 freezer...just like we store DNA or RNA. But they are stored in special media...not air. They are really tough bastards to "kill". When I say, most viruses dont like the cold, I am also referring to transmission properties. If I have the virus, and I cough in a warm climate, that can stay alive days and infect someone else. In a cold climate, we are usually looking at minutes to hours tops. This is partially because if the physics of how it travels is different. But this is also true...A virus is not really a cell...but you can kinda think of it as one. If a cell freezes...the water inside the cell freezes and expands rupturing the cell...the cell is now dead. The same is true of a virus. If the water freezing inside the viral wall expands beyond the wall's capability...it ruptures and can not replicate (even though the RNA could be collected and injected into new cells...and that RNA will replicate causing new viruses)...so it is dead (even though viruses are technically not alive). If the virus does not have much water and it freezes...it will "live" indefinitely (even though it is not technically alive). When a virus resides in us...we are what? 95% water? Water cant help but move into the virus. This makes it prone to rupturing when frozen.

I know this may sound confusing, but the bottom line...dont fly right now.

Good news...it is not airborne transmitted. It is droplet and contact transmitted. This is a huge break.

Confirmed by the CDC?

I believe I heard there have been 80-90 confirmed fatalities from this so far ( I won't get into the Chinese numbers reporting,) but don't forget, the flu kills upwards of 55k people every year. So ni, at this point, I'm not worried.

I do believe however that we are due some sort of pandemic event in the next 30-50 years that will definitely cull the herd. I will be dead by then though....

I'd be more worried about influenza at the moment, estimated in excess of 12000 flu related deaths in the USA already this season.

Not even a little concerned. It's a cold. I've had colds and flu before. They sorta suck but that's about it. Only thing I can't function with is the flu and at least then I get some rest.

If you watch enough medical drama on TV, you'll start to imagine things. There is no reason to fear the corona virus, if you listen to NPR.

The Chinese are not always truthful.

Currently, the CDC says, "At this time, it’s unclear how easily or sustainably this virus is spreading between people."

Regarding transmission, the CDC uses the words, "it is thought" instead of "it is known".
