OOC: arranged marriages for the warrior clan

There is a small warrior clan where everyone is related, so they have to bring in husbands and wives from outside the clan. Normally the young women of the clan would be traded for women of another clan, but the clan has lost too many people in a recent war (last remnant of an alien or fantasy race?), the clan elders want to require all their young people to breed to bring the clan back up to a good size so it won't die out or be politically weak. So they hire a matchmaker (my character) to find a batch of prospective brides and grooms and bring them to the clan (in the fantasy version, a remote village, in the science fiction version a spaceship that the whole clan lives in, or a settlement on a remote planet). The prospective brides and grooms will be provided with room and board for six months, by the end of which time they have to either marry one of the clanmembers or leave.

Some ideas:

- The clan members could have some sort of special ability like shapeshifting or magic or psionics - this would give them another reason to not give their daughters away to other clans, because they want to keep all the people who inherit this ability in the clan because it's their unique specialty and because they are the only ones who can properly train children to use this ability. Most clanmembers are fighters, but you could also RP a support person - a medic, a mechanic or weaponsmith, someone in charge of food/housing/supplies, a magic/technology specialist, etc.

- Clan members should be male or female and of some uniform ethnicity, but brides and grooms could be fantasy or alien races: elves, cat people, hermaphrodites, people with other abilities. Lots of room to create drama with prejudice, culture clashes, and faux pas.

- Someone agreeing to be a bride or a groom might be doing so to hide from the law or enemies.

- I'd like to see at least one incestuous pairing, cousins or brother and sister clanmembers who want to marry each other but the clan elders want to force them both to marry outsiders. Some nice angsty drama there.

- Similarly, a clan member could be gay but the clan elders want to force them to marry someone of the opposite gender so they can have children. In response the characters could struggle to find a magical or technological way for two males or two females to have a child.

1. Do you prefer a fantasy setting, a science fiction setting, or a mix?

2. What special ability if any do you think the clan should have?

3. What ethnicity/appearance should clan members have?


If you already have a character idea, feel free to also describe your character (you may create more than one if you like), and also what you are looking for in their future spouse/your roleplay partner. It would be nice to have people organized into pairs or trios before we start, although my character can interview anyone who wants to start RPing but doesn't have a love interest yet.

Well, it depends what kind of shapeshifting. A universal shapeshifter, like Odo from Star Trek DS9 for example, could indeed look like anything, but traditional therianthropes usually have only one human form and one animal form. The appearances of those two forms are also usually linked - a person with white-blond hair might be a white wolf, while a person with black hair and a beaky nose might be a raven. I like both kinds of shapeshifting, but people have a few times told me that they find a universal shapeshifter more difficult to roleplay than a traditional one. There's also the possibility that one or a few of the outsiders could be shapeshifters, while the clan people have some other special ability.

Add to the basic clan moores, multipal wives or husbands for leaders of the different family or groups within the clan. Can be either male or female leaders. They can also have comcubines/lovers without transgressing. but again in making choices, one has to be careful of who She/he chooses.

Time period ..... Ancient // modern//Sci-fi
I like Ancient with swords, axes, bows. No mass killing weapons. Plus unrestrained fighting and prisoners and slaves.

Pattern after the Highland Clans......Clan chieftan, sub chiefs, war chiefs, priests and warriors.

Hmm. Slavery is kind of redundant with arranged marriage - if you think about it, in both situations one person is suddenly expected to be intimate with and dependent on another person and this new situation is disturbingly permanent. Also, the inequality created by giving a man a wife and a slave, both of whom he can have sex with but who have totally different social standings... that weakens the romantic atmosphere I'd like to create here. A threesome is fine, but it should be motivated by love. Also, wouldn't it be more exciting if multiple marriage is not initially allowed and the threesome have to fight to win the clan elders' permission and acknowledgment?

What were you thinking the relationship between the two wives would be? Are they best friends or jealous rivals? Equals or one dominant and one submissive?

And I was really thinking more of a ninja clan myself. Where the clan as a whole is a family business, a mercenary army.
