Wanting and needing at the same time. It is worse then hunger, because hunger feeds the body, but this touch... this touch goes straight to the mind, the heart, some might even think the soul.

And when it can't be quenched, when the driving pulse of temptation is worse than even the basic of necessities, desperation kicks in. That drive owns you, it controls you. Everything becomes lost in this vast desert of confusion.

To be lost without a compass, the only true need running through your gut. There is no logic, no sane choice of right wrong good bad moral ethical jargon of confusion.

This is where our story lies, between nirvana and purgatory, in a small town of Desperation, Illinois.

Many tourists pass by this small sleepy town, so peaceful and quiet. But temptation has taken quite a liking to it... and has decided to stay.

The ache in her neck brought Candace Evans to the medicine cabinet, but it wasn’t what kept her standing there. Her eyes locked on the syringe, an old one that had been tucked in the corner of the cabinet and then hidden by a large bottle of Ibuprofen. She blinked back the tears that threatened to fall and swallowed the lump that had suddenly formed in her throat.

She closed her eyes and shut the cabinet, forgetting the capsules that would chase the headache away. Licking her lips she stared at the woman that looked back at her and sighed. “Grow up,” she whispered to herself and brushed her fingers through her brown hair. “Women all over the world are just like you. . .and they aren’t breaking down.”

Candace splashed cold water on her face and then dried it off, before sitting down at her vanity to apply her make-up. She wondered what Joseph would do if she told him she was thinking about returning to the clinic. Would he support her? She clipped on a pair of earrings and then added a pearl necklace. Her gaze fixed on a few wrinkles that were beginning to show around her lips and eyes. . .laugh lines, they were called. “But I’m not laughing,” she whispered to her reflection.

She heard stirring coming from behind the bathroom door and she knew Joseph would be wakening soon. She finished her make-up and quickly slipped her navy blue skirt on, hiding her slip and blue bikini panties. Her white silk top and navy jacket soon had her buttoned up and she looked like the insurance agent that she’d been for several years. Tucking a few loose strands of brown locks behind her ear, she darted out of the bathroom to ready Joseph a quick microwave breakfast from a box.

It wasn’t long before the coffee was ready and the smell of a bacon, cheese, and egg biscuit from the freezer was filling the house. She penciled a note to Joseph, telling him to have a good day and she’d be late because of a meeting with a couple looking to buy Life Insurance.

It wasn’t until she was out the door that she remembered the syringe and secretly hoped Joseph would see it and come to her about returning to the clinic. She rubbed her stomach, wishing it was already swollen with child and she had nothing to worry about. On her drive to work, she passed the town’s oldest church and she glanced at its high steeple. “Please Lord, if it’s not too much to ask,” she whispered, knowing God would know her desires as she sped toward the office.

Dr. Alisha Morgan looked into the rear view mirror at the street sign she had just past. She wondered how she could possible be missing the block where the real estate agent's building was. Finally after riding around the same block so often she sighted the realtor's sign. She shook her head in disgust how in the world did she miss it so often. She pulled into the driveway and parked. Her years in a hospital had made her run instead of walk and the clicking of her heels made a steady beat as she hurried to the front of the building and took the stairs quickly. As she opened the door she looked around and saw a receptionist to the left of the room. She walked over to her and waited till the woman looked up and her.

She opened the newspaper and placed it in front of the woman and pointed at a picture in it.

"I am interested in purchasing this"

She waited till the woman put on her reading glasses and looked at the picture.

"I understand your agency is selling this clinic"

It was a good buy, for the money and Alisha needed a tax shelter to off-set the money she made at her specialty. She waited impatiently for the woman to read. It seemed as if she was seeing it for the very first time. When she looked up again Alisha was forced to bite her lip so she wouldn't jump all over the woman.

"So is the agent who is selling this, here"

The woman was slow to answer and the thought that flew through Alisha's head was not a kind one. Finally she was told an agent would be with her directly to please have a seat.

Alisha walked away from the woman but she did not sit down. She feigned looking at the pictures on the wall of houses in the area. She was glad she had bought her house from an agent in the city. Two buys at this agency would have driven her over the top. Her new home was just outside the town of Temptation.
