Hello, this is the kick off of a new Firefly based RP thread. All OOC chatter will be kept here as well as an updated Roster and with luck a update on activity from time to time to keep new players fresh with the story.

Though this is not a closed RP it will be selective, knowledge of the Firefly 'verse , it's characters and it's lingo are a must. There are some fine players founding this game and it is our intention to keep the quality of the posts and rp as high as possible. This is likely to mean long and very wordy posts, vivid imagery and wonderful banter.

Applications will be posted in a following thread and should be PM'd to me.

And without further ado, on to the fun stuff.

Important note on Time Frame:
The timeframe for this game is during the Firefly series just following the episode War Stories. There is some tension among the crew but people are learning to get closer, River's odd traits are coming to light and some great possible reoccurring characters have been introduced.

Adelai Niska is still alive and well, and without doubt plotting against our heroes, Saffron is still out there and as we know looking for others to dupe into her web of lies, Atherton Wing has a grudge to settle with both the good captain and the lovely companion. So many directions, and chances for character expansion. The first chapter will be up and running shortly and follow on the heels of the War Stories ending.

The premise

Welcome to the future...

Earth that was is a thing of memory. Years of war and reckless abuse of natural resources left the planet a barren wasteland. The human race has taken Manifest Destiny to the stars.

Worlds across the galaxy have been terraformed and colonized, some more successfully the others. Planets like Persephone and Ariel represent the best and worst of mans achievements. For all their wealth and splendor, corruption seethes beneath the polite civilized exterior. A movement began, to unify what remained of the former Earth race. Two major factions held the majority of power and money, Anglo society and Asian society, the two proposed a merger of both culture and assets to make them a single dominant force in the galaxy. No one could oppose any single entity with such backing.

Of course this idea was not without it's objectors, and soon an Independent party arose, people who had no desire to live under the oppressive yoke of a tight fisted government. No diplomacy could settle the conflict, and as so often happens it lead to war. A war for independence, with the Anglo-Cino Unification Alliance on one side and the Independent 'Browncoats' on the other.

The tide of war ebbed and swelled for both sides until the battle of Serenity Valley, suffering massive losses the Independents pulled their ships from the planet and left a number of their own stranded, dead or dieing. This loss struck a deeply emotional blow that finished the resistance. The Independents fell to the power of the Alliance leaving many of the former browncoats disheartened.

One of these Browncoats was Malcolm Reynolds, together with his compatriot Zoe Warren he purchased a Firefly class transport ship and went into business for himself. A mechanic, a pilot and a merc as well as a seemingly out of place Companion rounded out the crew. Others joined for their own reasons, a doctor, his ailing sister and a man of God.

Where these misfits belong is anyone guess, but they will try to make their way in the 'verse with a little help from each other.

The Cast

Crew of Serenity: (Cast Subject to change, feel free to ask about any character)

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k215/lil_squirter/aintrich_blank.gifThe Captain: Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds
During the war of independence, Mal enlisted on the independent side, fighting against the Alliance as a sergeant in the 57th Overlanders. He was part of the "browncoat" force on Hera holding Serenity Valley for over a month, before the Alliance finally overwhelmed them. A born leader, Mal kept his troops' morale up in the most hopeless of situations. Once a devout believer in God, the end of the war saw him losing his faith.
After the war, Mal purchased a battered old Firefly-class ship, which he named Serenity, and took jobs as they came. He remains a born leader, and is fanatically dedicated to his crew. He is not, however, a born strategist, and his plans often tend to go a bit wonky. Still, he inspires fierce loyalty in his people.
(Played by Armphid)

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k215/lil_squirter/wounds_blank.gifThe Loyal Soldier: Zoë Warren
Fighting alongside Malcom Reynolds in the War for Independence, Zoe Warren earned the respect and dogged companionship of the captain. She is the straight man to his humor, the strong arm to back up his mouth and the warrior first beside him in battle. A loyal woman with no second thoughts on her chosen lifestyle

She had opposed the hiring of the brash and undisciplined Wash as ships pilot. Something about him just didn't set well with her. In time that ill tension lead to an odd pairing of the two in marriage. Again Zoe's fierce loyalty to her man has gotten her into as much trouble as her instincts and marksmanship can get her out of.
(Played by lil_squirter)

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k215/lil_squirter/ff8.pngThe Pilot: Hoban "Wash" Washburne
Wash was always a seat of his pants pilot. He was one of the best in his class in everything except showing up on time and being serious. He somehow managed to get through on mediocre test scores and the fact that he was the most amazing pilot in his class.
With his tendency to being playful and comedic he rarely stayed long with a position, until he met Mal Reynolds and his defunct ship; Serenity. Something cliqued with the pilot..namely Mals heartstoppingly beautiful second in command, Zoe. Wash made a decision to try and take on this job as more then a passing gig, he proved himself worthy of the position of pilot and (at least to Zoe) husband.
Not a fighter by nature Wash has learned how to survive and make the most of his skills at flying the rig. Ever ready with a joke even in the most dire of situations, Wash is a valued asset to the crew.
(Played by Chronicle_Tenko)

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k215/lil_squirter/firefly-ariel-006.pngThe Mechanic:Kaywinnet Lee "Kaylee" Frye
With no formal training, Kaylee keeps Serenity running. Born with an intuitive mechanical talent. Kaylee Frye took to fixing things as easily as most do to eating and breathing. She's very proud of Serenity viewing it as home and the crew as family. As a result, she's extremely sensitive to insults (or even candid observations) about the ship's appearance.
Never insult Serenity unless you want to pick a fight with the chipper young woman. She's no stranger to work and willing to put her all into keeping the Firefly Class ship up an running. She is ever chipper and smiling, trying to find the bright side of everything. Surprisingly her innocent appearance belies an adventerous spirit in the realms of life as well as sex.
(Character Open)

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k215/lil_squirter/letyouhurtme_blank.gifThe Ambassador: Inara Serra
A licensed Companion, trained and skilled in many forms of love-making, Inara brokered a deal with Mal to rent one of Serenity's shuttles as her residence and place of business.
Inara left the Companion House on Sinhon in order to be on her own, on a ship that travels mostly between the outer planets — an unusual choice for a Companion.
Inara's presence lends an air of legitimacy to the Serenity's crew and activities, and she has fallen in love with life on the ship. She also gets along well with most of the crew, though she struggles to make sense of her complicated love-hate relationship with Mal.
(Played by lil_squirter)

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k215/lil_squirter/IconSean03.jpgThe Doctor: Simon Tam
Simon was one of the finest doctors on Osiris. His parents sent his gifted younger sister, River, to the Academy, an exclusive school where she could learn with other brilliant children … or so they said.
He grew concerned when he didn't hear from River for months — and then he suddenly received letters from her that seemed to be nonsense, but were in fact written in a code that said that she was being hurt. Against the wishes of his parents, and exhausting his entire personal fortune and damaging his medical reputation, Simon broke River out of the Academy and travelled to Persephone, where he booked passage on the Serenity. Simon and River are both fugitives from the Alliance. Mal has agreed to let them stay aboard the Serenity, chiefly because Simon's medical skills are sorely needed by the crew.
(Played by LongshanksSierra)

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k215/lil_squirter/river158.pngThe Fugitive: River Tam
River possesses powers that are a threat not only to the forces pursuing her but also to the Serenity crew, who have given her sanctuary.
Before being rescued by her brother, Dr. Simon Tam, she spent years enduring experiments in an Alliance lab, and the experience has left her forever altered. She is certainly a genius of sorts, but one who is tortured by her own intellect.
Most notably, she is borderline psychic and can read most minds. Because of this, she has an incredible comprehension of knowledge and data, but it can lead to unpredictable and chaotic behavior.
In addition to her heightened mental abilities, she is also preternaturally dexterous and highly skilled in martial arts and weapons combat. However, these gifts appear infrequently; most of the time she swings between catatonia and manic, gibbering fits.
(Played by Impish_pixie)

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k215/lil_squirter/tobesomeone_blank.gifThe Merc: Jayne Cobb
A mercenary, Jayne was working for a competitor of Serenity's when he got the drop on Mal and Zoë. He switched sides when Mal made him a better offer, and he has remained on Serenity since then.
Jayne's guiding star is what is best for Jayne Cobb — self-interest is his only interest. He excels at violence, which is why Mal keeps him around, despite the legitimate concern that he might betray any one (or all) of them if the price is right.
(Played by FenixZero)

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k215/lil_squirter/b1-ff26.pngThe Shepard: Meria Book
Book came aboard the Serenity at Persephone, telling Kaylee he had come from Southdown Abbey and wanted to "walk the world a while." Paying for his passage with real fruit — a rare thing for the crew — Book's spiritual nature is a marked contrast to the grittier nature of the crew.
There are exceptions, though; there is more to Book than meets the eye, as he possesses intimate knowledge of things outside the purview of most "people of God".
(Note: Books name is subject to change, Meria and Derrial have both been given.)

The FAQ

FAQ

What is Firefly?
Firefly was a short lived TV show on Fox. The show was set in the year 2517 CE, following the depletion of Earth's resources and an expansion of the human race into the frontier of outer space. The show takes its name from the "Firefly-class" starship operated by the central characters; the ship's class name is itself a reference to the appearance of the ship, whose tail section blinks during acceleration. Captain Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds is the veteran of a war of resistance against "The Alliance"—an organization that attempted to achieve the unification of all mankind under a single imperial government. A central "core" of planetary systems have fallen under Alliance control, while settlers and refugees in the farther reaches of space enjoy relative freedom from the long arm of the government but lack many of the amenities of a high-tech civilization. Mal now owns a small Firefly-class starship called Serenity, making cargo runs and performing various other tasks—legal or otherwise—to scrape together a living for himself and his crew.

Cowboys and Spaceships...?
The setting of Firefly is a mixture of future tech and wild west durability. The entire setting has a feeling that is not only plausible but comfortable. You can see space ships flying over a herd of horses in the opening sequence, the characters pack side arms that look more like civil war pistol replicas then fancy laser pistols. They is no foil and lame here, think canvas and grease. Everything is grity and real and full of life.

You Role Play this?
Yes! Role play is based around not only the show but the coming movie, comics and any other media released about Firefly. I do not claim to be all knowing about it and love when people tell me things I do not already know about the show and the 'verse in general.

Ok..How do you role play this?
Fill out an application and send it in. Pretty easy, the names of the people involved are listed in on the previous posts and feel free to contact them at any time for more info.

What do I need to know to play?
You need a decent knowledge of the show and the verse. The information for this is easy to find and there is no excuse for not knowing something like the proper spelling of a persons name. The dialect is a good thing to know but don't worry about the psuedo-chinese used in the show, there are links in the link post to help with those.

Can I make up my own character?
Sure. Created Characters (CC's) are welcome as long as we have the majority of the canon roles already filled. It becomes hard to maintain a semblance of the show if there are no canon characters and only CC's running around on the ship/planet whatever.

What is 'canon'?
Dictionary definition: the authentic works of a writer; a sanctioned or accepted group or body of related works; an accepted principle or rule; b : a criterion or standard of judgment; a body of principles, rules, standards, or norms.
Canon is a term used to refer to something specifically created and already in existence in a work. In this case characters ships, places already shown, discussed in Firefly are Canon.

So I can play a prostitute?
Inara is a Companion, in the show only two others have been encountered, and this was admittedly rare. A Companion character would have to be thoroughly gone over and the criteria for playing him/her would be worked out between the game owner and the player.

If I want to change a character, can I?
Moderate changes to characters are acceptable, as we all grow and change over time. Making a character gay, breaking up a married couple, killing, marring or dismembering are not allowed. Such drastic changes do not flatter the world we are borrowing for game play, they insult it.

Good time to announce this. I will be going away as well. The date has completely snuck up on me.

I'll be going home for the holiday (American Thanksgiving for my friends in other countries) Trying to sneak a lap top but not sure how successful I will be with that. Since my family is in a small northern farming community that's about all the computer connection I have a chance of getting.

Aside from AIM possibly on my cell. PM me if you want that.

So I'll be gone from Friday 17th through Sunday the 26th.

My RP partners have rights to move my characters as needed or arrange convienent comas, what have you.

Gonna be hard not seeing you guys on a near daily basis though.

Thread Re-Opening!

Or trying to.

Former cast is welcome, new people are also welcome.

Please send PM's if you are interested in ANY characters.
