So this issue of Plenty lists these as the twelve most contaminated produce items out there and should be bought Organic whenever possible -
apples
bell peppers
celery
cherries
imported grapes
nectarines
peaches
pears
potatoes
red raspberries
spinach
strawberries

These were listed as the least contaminated by pesticides -
asparagus
avocados
bananas
broccoli
cauliflower
sweet corn
kiwis
mangoes
oinions
papayas
pineapples
sweet peas

I thought bananas were sprayed quite a bit due to spiders, but I guess it doesn't get into the fruit itself, just on the outside.

Interesting... Out of that list I grow my own Bell Peppers, potatoes, spinach, broccoli and cauliflower, sweet peas and asparagus... All organically...

But it doesn't last the whole year so I still have to go supermarket. I buy organic when I can but the economics don't always lend themselves to eco-friendly purchasing...

When people start demanding it, prices will get better but we need better education...

Thanks for the heads up, Gypsy :rose:

When I was a kid, what is now Silicon Valley, was some of the richest farmland in the world. We used to have gobs of fruits, cucs, corn, tomatoes, and onions from the local farms. I don't ever recall any pesticide spraying aircraft, just the planes for Moffett Field. Maybe they sprayed from trucks that I wasn't aware of but the food never had that weird smell or taste. Now the produce in the store seems crappy and expensive.

Lots of fruits here at my place. :) Just got the first cucs for the season in and tomatoes are on the way.

ahhhhhhhhhh.......gotta love the cali central valley. We have tons of organic fuits and veggies here and they are cheap cheap cheap.

I need to start selling some to you guys I could make a fortune.

ah - we're still a month away from tomatoes and corn - at least. But the strawberries and raspberries are in... its a good start.

We have five big bags of dirt sitting in my car for the container garden on the deck--tomatoes, peppers, lots of basil and other herbs and some flowers. I think I need to start an avocado plant or maybe you could just send a few avos. They're awfully cheap in your part of the world. ;)

I'll trade you basket for basket on strawberries since I have the blackberries here.

I just put either of them on cookie sheets and freeze them and then put the frozem ones in ziplock bags for the big freezer. Out here my chest freezer is full of frozen fruits, albacore tuna, and salmon. Halibut hasn't been as easy to catch lately for some reason.

My lemon basil is too lemony. More for tea than cooking with.

I don't think you'll get avos to fruit in your region, but you may get a nice plant from a pit. :)
