Just Get Yourself Free of Lee

I wish they'd just left the horses there for the two statues (there's are a third and fourth statues from an earlier period--the Lewis and Clark and George Rogers Clark expeditions--in town also scheduled to come down because they are deemed to denigrate native Americans--one in town and one at the University of Virginia). The horses are deemed to be works of high art in their own right, and the horses didn't have a choice in any of this.

Put the horses out to pasture in an art meadow dedicated to their innocence in the deplorable actions of their owners.

The city is soliciting offers from museums and historical sites, and has received some offers, which are currently under review.

"FALLS CHURCH, Va. (AP) — Virginia’s highest court ruled Thursday that the city of Charlottesville can take down two statues of Confederate generals, including one of Robert E. Lee that became the focus of a violent white nationalist rally in 2017.

The state Supreme Court overturned a Circuit Court decision in favor of a group of residents who sued to block the city from taking down the Lee statue and a nearby monument to fellow Gen. Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson. Charlottesville’s city council voted to remove both.

White supremacist and neo-Nazi organizers of the August 2017 “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville said they went to the city to defend the statue of Lee. They clashed with counterprotesters before a man plowed his car into a crowd of people, killing a woman."

Yeah, I think Representative Sheila Jackson Lee should be removed from Congress having been named for two slave owning Confederate Generals.

Yeah.
Them DEAD people are really dangerous, especially the marble ones or concrete...cast bronze.
But once they are gone who's to say they ever existed?
Another hundred years of PC,Slavery will be just a myth that can't be proved.
And because of the intelligent "Wise people" history will probably repeat itself yet again.:(

Pshaw, the anti-CRT crowd here is already pushing the 'slavery is a myth' talking point.

Outlawing the teaching of the history of slavery in Murica is the all-important first step towards the New Age of Conservative Revisionism.

They're not getting a lot of traction with their revisionist hoo-ha.......yet.

Don't lie, we all learned about slavery in the US growing up. We just didn't hear any lies about it, like we do from the left now.

It is amazing what propaganda can achieve on the right and far right.

Slavery never happened.
If it did happen it wasn't so bad.
Africans had slaves and so did African Americans so that must make it ok.
Eugenics didn't happen here in the USA....the natural progression of racists is towards denial of basic human rights and decency...and the Nazis didn't learn eugenics from the USA first.

All racist denials. Both on an individual level and also, for it to be so pervasive in US society and education, through a systemic plan to promote it.

Please! Times up racists

I just hope they never destroy that bas-relief on Stone Mountain -- it is the only Confederate monument I have ever seen that has any esthetic value.

Ever seen the night-time laser show they superimpose on the carving every summer night after sundown? Patriotic jingoism at its finest! They always end with Elvis singing Murican Trilogy and animate Robert E. Lee getting off his high horse Traveller and breaking his sword across his knee.

They took General Nathan Bedford Forrest dropping his sword and donning his Klan hood out of the show after the first year.

"and I'm proud to be uh Murican, where at least ah know ah'm free..."

Cute. But Lee is her married name, and her parents were Jamaican immigrants. Like most common English names, Jackson is a VERY common name for the descendents of slaves. Also, Stonewall Jackson was from present-day West Virginia and, if I'm not mistaken, his family never owned slaves.

What "lies" are you referring to?

Is this the point in discussion where you declare "not ALL coloreds were slaves" and/or "black people owned slaves too!" or do you have a new deflection you wish to share with the class?

Statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee dismantled in Virginia
Sept. 8 (UPI) -- A 12-ton statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee -- which has stood on Monument Square in Richmond, Va., for more than a century -- was taken down Wednesday and cut into pieces in front of a cheering crowd.

Hey hey hey, bye bye .....

Next, Utah can kick out Senator Mike Lee. He promised to serve only two terms when he was elected in 2010. He’ll be starting his third term next month. A true Trumpublican, he recently collected donations for Herschel Walker’s campaign, and pocketed a chunk for himself.

if i'm not mistaken, don't most (if not all) of these statues go to museums dedicated to the history of the USA? Paired with facts and information educating people as to who the people were and why the statue was built, museums seem their rightful place.

Subject matter aside for a moment, some of the artists created beautiful sculptures... just a shame they elevated the legacies of the confederate ideal, proving rallying images for those who still believe in some romanticised notion of The War of Northern Aggression. Artists in all genres the world over have created commissioned masterpieces for truly awful subjects.

The Charlottesville Lee statue sits in legal purgatory. It initially was awarded to a Charlottesville community center in a former school for blacks, which was going to melt it down for a community-choice new piece of art to be made. A couple of museums that wanted it, though, have sued, saying there had been no competitive bidding for it. So it sits in storage. The Stonewall Jackson statue was sent out to Hollywood to the LAXART musuem, which is currently closed for renovations, so it's unknown what they'll do with it.

One problem with removing these two statues was that, unlike most Civil War soldier statues, mass produced from molds, these two were made by notable bronze sculptors and had been given historical designation as public art.
