Did none of you people live thru Clinton or both Bushes? Is it Bushes or Bush's? Whichever.
Reagan was no saint either. Dismiss Ford and Carter cuz Ford and Carter and then you got Nixon.
Not counting Obama cuz too divisive to get a clear picture, you got 6 of 8 just in my lifetime who were horrible liars and cheats. Yet we're all still here enjoying life just like always.
Make sure your town clerk is honest, they can fuck up your life way more than anyone in the Oval Office.

Every President, every politician, and every human being tells lies and engages in acts of hypocrisy. But Barack Obama does these things to a far greater degree than anyone else that I have ever known of.

His campaign promises were so much better sounding than anyone else’s – no lobbyists in his administration, waiting five days before signing all non-emergency bills so people would have time to read them, putting health care negotiations on C-SPAN, reading every bill line by line to make sure money isn’t being wasted, prosecution of Wall St. criminals, ending raids against medical marijuana in states where it’s legal, high levels of transparency.

Obama’s promises of these wonderful things sounded inspiring and sincere. They sounded so much better than the promises of any other President. So when Obama broke these promises, it felt so much worse than when other Presidents broke their promises.

Again, Clinton and even Bush and Reagan are not even close to this pathological liar.

You do realize one should be concerned about a pathological liar being president right? And further one can care about local and federal at the same time? Additionally that being concerned only about one of them while excusing the other is an ignorant thing?

Most people don't lie when everyone knows you're lying, and you know that everyone knows you're lying. The denial that he ever made a promise of $1 million if Elizabeth Warren provided proof of native heritage is an example. He had to know he was filmed saying that, and that everyone remembered seeing him say it. He denied it anyway.

I think Trump does it because he's spent most of his life dealing with the tabloid media, who were happy to let him get away with what he euphemistically called "truthful hyperbole" as long as he provided them access and material.

So what? It's his thing and it's worked for him so far. I'm not even a little bit concerned about it. No more or less than I was with others. You wanna fret then fret. I think it's entertaining.
Maybe not on the level of Obama gonna take my guns or a hardcore birther but still funny to watch.

Self promotion has always been his deal and he's good at it. He knows people and what they want to hear. Got him a ton of attention in the 80's and onward and made him president.
He's about as good at that as he is at running casinos but he's in the office and nobody else is.
I don't care for the bullying but the lying is just par for the course. I assume the only par he's ever legitimately had.

The point is, with skilled politicians you'll never know how much they lie. They're skilled liars, and even if you suspect it they make sure it's nigh on impossible to prove.

Trump lies like a dimwitted schoolboy, either to big himself up or to wriggle out of trouble, without the brains to wipe the cookie crumbs from his mouth before he blames it on the dog.

Political lying should be played like chess, not like blindfold kerplunk during an earthquake.

No, all politicians are not corrupt and regular liars. I understand a certain segment of the population wants you to believe that. Why bother voting they are all the liars? Why bother voting they are all corrupt? Why bother voting they are all the same?

It must be nice to be so priviledged that Trump and his cronies’ policies don’t affect your life at all.

That's a good point, but I assume it's the people who talk to him who they're most concerned with.


The entertainment media used to have a lot of fun with Trump continually claiming that The Apprentice was the #1 show on television, when (after its very successful first season) it was never even #1 in its time slot. He said that even as the original non-celebrity version of the show was on the verge of being cancelled. At first, reporters would try to correct him as if he might genuinely be misinformed. Once they realized he didn't give a shit and was determined to keep repeating the lie, they would just chuckle at him.

That whole experience informed the opinion, which I repeated as often as anyone else here, that Trump had no chance whatsoever: leaving aside considerations like his utter lack of experience and his rampant criminality, eventually enough people would catch on that he lies to them constantly and would be offended by that, I assumed. I'm not the first person to overestimate the intelligence of the American people.

Why should anyone be "concerned" that Trump lies?

Do you not think that our government has been lying to us for a couple of centuries already? All those deflections and cover-ups because "you don't need to know" or "it's for your safety" are mostly lies.

"Plausible deniability" isn't just 2 words next to each other in a sentence. And let's totally not forget how the spy game is played. Or the Congressional game for that matter. (Does anyone remember that economist who lied about the effects of ObamaCare and gloated about how the American people are gullible enough to buy into it?)

Trump has self image issues, that's pretty obvious. He says false things so his ego is protected from harm by those whose only purpose is to sling stones and arrows at him. That doesn't make him mentally unstable or undesirable as President. Unless you start with that premise then go hunt for something to support it.

What you want to do is equate Trump's everyday lies with the sort of lies told by Nixon in Watergate. And you can't because they aren't on the same level. So, what you can't do in fact, you try to do in gross numbers.

I keep wondering what kind of life anyone has who devotes their entire day to counting lies and reporting on it. That person, and those who follow them, are the ones I'm concerned about.

It's a false equivalency that his supporters love to use because "the party of personal responsibility" has now become "the party of alternative facts."

Because he's a republican, it's okay to lie as opposed to how the right wingers cried about Hillary lying before the election.

The damage that Trump and republicans have done to the credibility of our government and elected officials is disgraceful

Yep, and Governors. They knew the ACA would become popular, heck it was (Obama Care vs Kynect). Now republicans are all for covering ore existing conditions. Polling does wonders sometimes.

Politicians equivocate, which they do to avoid lying. Trump is a different breed. He is entirely indifferent to the truth. I've heard him called a bullshitter as distinct from a liar -- the difference is, a liar knows what the truth is and a bullshitter just doesn't care.
