Well here's a surprise.
They should be allowed their independence. They have nothing to offer except higher crime rates, poverty levels, tax exempt debt instruments that will disappear with statehood, so no support on Wall Street. We would have to accept their crushing public debt. Statehood would add two US senators and four or five members of the House, all Democrats. The number of congressional seats is fixed at 435 which means the five new seats would have to be taken away from five states through redistricting after the next census. How many Republicans are going to let that happen? None, Statehood for Puerto Rico will never happen. There are social, economic, and political entities, solidly lined up against it.

Perhaps if Puerto Rico had been a state when last year's hurricane had hit, it wouldn't have been so easily and callously abandoned and ignored by the Trump regime.

Nobody abandoned Puerto Rico. Their economy was in financial ruin before the hurricane as they screamed through one debt level after another in pursuit of one destructive progressive policy after another.

So it's ok to let 3000+US Citizens die because their politicians are inept?
The pollies were incompetent at all levels, local, Federal and the Federal executive.
Trump can at least reflect that the neglect of Puerto Rico is gunna ensure that any shortfall in Migration south of the border will be compensated by big increases in Latinos moving from America's island colony to the mainland.
