The 50 Plus Cafe, Pub, All-Nite Greasy Spoon and Dive Bar

My mom has a hand mixer that they got for their wedding 58 years ago. My dad takes it apart and cleans it and grease is all the parts every couple years and as good as new. They also have a 50-year-old stand up freezer. Had to be careful careful closing the door so it doesn't pop open cuz of the seal, works like a charm freezes stuff solid. It doesn't even have self defrost when it gets sort of close to being empty we move the stuff into the small freezer and unplug it to defrost it
I love old shit that was built to last and is reliable as fuck.

Old cars, power, equipment, household items…

Miss k, we have an old refrigerator in our farm that I think still runs. Easily 1950s vintage. I don’t know if I would want to eat anything that came out of it though…😂

Oh, and I forgot the best one! One of the water line PEX fittings cracked and started leaking. Luckily it was in the basement, and not one in the wall upstairs.

Bought all the tools and crimp rings to replace that. I'm sure it's only matter of time.

I know the plumber who did the work, and he's been doing this for a long time. He said he's never seen one fail before.
It's probably my ongoing feud with Murphy...
Fuckin Murphy!

It’s funny, pex was supposed to solve everything.

Sigh.

Good luck!!

They should do 30 years. I will admit this one did survive several good lightning hits, so it was a matter of time. I keep a spare, because there is a 3 to 4 week lead time on a replacement.

Upside of living on top the hill, ZERO chance of getting flooded. Down side, high probability of lightning. 🌩️
Always be prepared!!

Are you SURE she's your kid, W?!? Elvis is only the KING of rock n roll! 🤣🤣🤣
This got me thinking about one of my long departed favorite authors. Lewis Grizzard. For those not in the loop, he was a columnist for the Atlanta Constitution, wrote 52 books (humor) and was one of those quirky out in left field types that you just couldn’t help but love! RIP Lewis. Oh yeah, Elvis was the KING!

Hope everybody gets through this Monday. We had an extra hour to prepare! The LG MZ…

The pex is good, it's the F@%ing fittings. I think it was a case of stress corrosion cracking.

Which reminds me, I had a cold water hose to a bathroom sink fail similarly. Brass cracked off near the nut. I'm sure that was SCC also.

Not 100% certain, but I think removing lead from the brass in water supply components had given us inferior brass.

Knowing this now, I would have spec'd stainless pex fittings. If any of you ever build a house, keep that in mind...

This is a scourge of the modern age. Something stops working and people just throw it away and demand a new, cheap replacement. Few even consider whether it would be repairable. Suppliers produce inferior quality goods because they want customers to purchase items more frequently. It drives me mad, almost as mad as not knowing what the solution is!
For things that I really care about, I will buy on quality and pay extra.

most household items are relatively disposable to me. But not good cutlery or kitchen tools.

Autos are surprisingly cheaply made but far more reliable now than ever.

Farm equipment and tools? I always go for quality.

I still have a set of Wustof and Henkel knives we bought over 30 yrs ago when living in Germany. They have the black handles and I’ve thought of replacing them but can’t pull the trigger.

Thank you, I was planning to change the nozzle in the bathroom.

Was he in this band?

King Gizzard and the Lizard wizard

But most mornings I make what I call mush: oatmeal, blueberries, peanut or almond butter, water and whatever fruit are in season. (Apples, pears, banana, strawberries, blackberries. Peaches etc)
I have tried oatmeal SO many times! I want to like oatmeal, but it doesn't like me. I get what feels like a blood sugar crash after an hour. Doesn't matter what I put in it, nuts, fruit, oils, flax. I used to like eggs, until I figured out I was somewhat allergic to them...

Lately it's been a fruit and veggie smoothie (broccoli, carrot, celery, blackberries, apples, etc.) Strangely, those last all morning. Or beans and rice, heavy on the beans. Topped with a splash of salsa. (And sometimes a little sour cream mixed in).
