I hate to to deviate from the party line, but yes, they can. When she was younger she identified as Indian-American (her mother is Tamil, from India). When it was politically advantageous for her to do so, she identified as black, which, social constructs aside, she's also entitled to do as her father IS Jamaican, both her grandparents were Afro-Jamaican. Harris's paternal grandmother told Harris that she was descended from Irish-born plantation owner Hamilton Brown, who founded the local Anglican Church where she is buried. Now that's only anecdotal and I have no idea if there was ever any genetic testing done to validate that, but her ancestry on her dad's side is black and she's perfectly entitled to identify as black if she wishes. And that's skipping all the social construct stuff. LOL

Now, she did adjust how she identified, for obviously political reasons, and fair enough to make fun of that. She switched, after all. But it IS a perfectly valid identity for her to claim. But she didn't "switch" races. She's always been mixed, and speaking as someone whose mixed myself, I don't see any real issue with that. It's easy enough to identify either way - I'm more Chinese when I'm with Chinese, and more white when I'm with whites and I don't see anything wrong with that at all.
