Yes, whooping cough, or Pertussis, has been making a resurgence. It can be deadly for the young and us olds. If your vaccinations are not up to date, I urge you to get a DPT vaccine.

This includes tetanus which some of you REALLY need. I'm looking at you, W, G, and Wat, especially! Working in/around dirt and on farming equipment can increase your risk.

I'm (pretty) sure (enough) that I got poked for tetanus within the last 5 years. Some well-meaning GP or NP suggested it and I didn't argue the point.


On a similar topic, something I read recently said that all of the chemicals in my live may contribute to causing cancers in others. These would be things like automotive associated oils, gun oils, machine fluids, grease, and the like. Basically, anything that exposes a body to heavy metals/compounds, and so on. I have found a decent brand of nitrile gloves that I almost like, so I have gotten in the habit, like on my wee rifle project, of using the nitriles to handle the parts and the cleaning oils. And I need to wear the dollar-store readers, so there, I have safety glasses, too. Late to the party, but I got here.

In other news, I finally got the clip release latch pin out of that damned rifle. The area inside the latch was full of oily/greasy funky crap. Toothbrush and Hoppe #9 to clear that, and bit of carb cleaner on the pin holes. Had my glasses on and still managed to get a bit in my eye. I also got the gas system off of the front end of the barrel. It's cleaner now, too. I may have to make a wee trough just longer than the length of a barrelled action to put these things in (I guess I'll buy another one of these cheapies and rebuild it) and let it soak. I probably should soak this in EvapoRust, too. I don't know - we'll see. Anyway, I put another coat on the front handguard because it just doesn't have the lustre of the other two pieces, so a touch more finish might do the trick. All the wee pieces are in the bowl with more Hoppe's to keep soaking - along with the bolt. I was toying with not disassembling that, but as bad as those other places were and as much shit as was in them, and with the empty bit in the bolt and the fact that Important Stuff lives there. Like the firing pin. Yeah, clear-n-clean.

being bald, I have learned the hard way. Always wear a hat (unless it’s just five minutes or so.) I have a small precancerous spot on my head so I gotta be careful. Boonie hat or baseball cap at all other times.

Glad you’re figuring this rifle out and getting it cleaned properly. My friend is coming out from western PA next week and he is being his M1A, his P38, Luger and an old ww2 era makarov.

Now I’m thinking I should break out my Garand… but I better field strip it first and clean it.

I'll speak for myself. I'm on a WW2 kick at the moment, having bought a M1 carbine and 2 M1s in the last 18 months or so. I'm taking them to pieces and giving them a good cleaning and fixing the little broken or worn out bits. I don't have wall hangers, I have shooters, so they'll get used. So, collecting and recreation. And if a coyote pops up, well, a bit of varminting, too. We're not overrun with deer Out West yet. Yet.

I’m the same except for my 1873 Springfield trap door. That hangs over my fireplace.

All the rest are shooters!

NJ is a friggin deer paradise. They have no reason to go out west! 😂 Too much development, not enuf predators. A day doesn’t go by that I don’t see deer.

I lease our farm/woodlands out to our local rec club for hunting. Only a few people hunt it and they’re good. But once hunting Season begins, they fade into nowhere seemingly….
