Personally, I rarely take a shot beyond 350 yrds or so. I try and confine my shots to the maximum point-blank range of the load and bullet I'm using. So, in the case of the .284 175 gr spitzer loaded at 2900 FPS I know if I'm an inch and a half or two high at 100yds the bullet will fall somewhere along a nine-inch vertical line at 360 yards the maximum point-blank range for that bullet and velocity.

I was thinking about that whole zero deal recently since I now have two new uppers to sight in. So I can fiddle with this arrangement when I get time to, which will likely as not be in Spring.

The .300 Win Mag is a damn good round and it will take heavier bullets than a 7mm Mag but the question is, do you really need to have your shoulder slapped that hard in the lower 48?

I think that would come down to the game and the range. At what distance do you want your minimum ft-lbs delivered. And both have been eclipsed in that realm by rounds like the Nosler family and a few others. Both are fantastic rounds, no doubt. And 300 has served the military very well.

Yup. Like you I'm fairly recoil immune but the muzzle jump was irritating (same with the 7mm) so I installed a quality muzzle brake and the recoil is down in the 17 ft/lb region now (comparable to a 270 or 308).
