Wat's Guns-N-Stuff Thread

Stock arrived today via Brown. They're . . . about the same shade of brown. It'll get stripped and refinished. Maybe clear. Looks to be some Unobtanium Walnut.

Of course, it's to hold a nasty "assault rifle," whatever that is . . . .

Cosmoline impregnated?

Blissfully, no!!! Allegedly, this stuff was sold off from the US facility sometime in the 70s and an old guy in NC bought much of it. This is part of that stash from when he sold out several years ago. Maybe a bit worse for shipping, but so it goes.

Actually, I got 2 of them. One is ready to refinish and the other has a couple of dings which will need to meet the tea kettle. Both dark. I'm thinking natural, but I might stain one.

We'll see. They'll keep me off the roads for a couple of weekends this winter.

Well, at least you're saved having to remove that stuff.

Get a chunk of similar colored wood from a local mill (or big box store) and try some Tung Oil on it. See how you like it.

That's kinda why I got two stocks. I don't think that I'll find much, if anything, that'll match this very closely. I'll strip them both and then try some finish on the poorer one and see what I think. I get something I like and then I can give a go to redoing the better one to suit me.

These guys have Walnut turning blanks of various shades.

Barrington

Cheap way of experimenting. I've done business with them before, albeit for a different purpose.

Thanks for the tip, and yes, it is cheap. Got 4 little blocks headed my way, so I can fiddle and futz and figure out what I want to do for color and finish.

In other news, we were discussing a 10mm 1911 the other day and I found this:

I have 1 of those in 9mm. It's the finicky one for some reason. I think it's just too tight and needs more range time to get with the program.

If I were to have a 10mm like that I'd probably go with Commander length instead of full sized. Not that I need another BBQ gun.

I'm not sure that those kinds of firearms are happy before they've had 100 rounds or more through them, and a good cleaning or two to boot. The 2 Springfield 45s I have had to date did shoot pretty well out of the box. One was used and the other was mil-spec. These models may be smithed a bit tighter. The negative comments regarded cycling.

I did have a bargain basement Hi-Power once that was a bastard in its first 100 rounds. After I cussed it and cleaned it, I never had a moment's trouble ever again out of it.

That particular 9mm is the only 1911 I've ever had which has issues. Every other 1911 has run right out of the box.

It's a target model and is a lot tighter in all its clearances than the usual stuff. Which is why I think it needs a couple of thousand more rounds through it before it figures out what its job really is.

A few more boxes of ammo, a bit more cleaning/lubing, and perhaps a stern talking-to.

My funky double-stack 10mm model is very sensitive to fouling/grunge. Next I pick it up will be to give it a good going through, and them a couple more boxes of "food".

I like the looks of that single stack. Maybe next bonus month . . . .

Hmmm, probably not.

I did order some sample walnut to play with. I hope that it's halfway a similar grain and texture to what these stocks are. And if not, I haven't tied up much in it anyway.

We were talking about 1911s at work today. There were 3 HVAC guys and me, and we all have at least one. The only guy with a complaint has a Kimber, and all he said about it was that it was a tad finicky.

I'd never have a Kimber simply due to cost. My Springfield was affordable and came with night sights, better trigger, beveled mag well, ambidextrous safety, and extreme sexiness!

The blanks they sent me very much matched the grain that you'd see in a rifle stock. I think they'll get the job done for you.

That's been my experience with Kimbers. They seem to be ammo/load sensitive.

It'll just depend on the grain and the type of growth.

City pussies don't understand none of this shit.

I think that's what my deceased buddy who never "bonded with" his held against it. He loves his Wilson, however. Said it was worth it all in.

Due to extremely high order volume over the past few weeks, orders placed at this time may take 5 to 10 days to be shipped out. We currently have an extremely heavy backlog of orders, and all orders will be filled, but expect shipping delays.

That's always a damned shame.

ammosexual...I dont know how I never heard that one! love it! have to take that one into the club this sunday.
Breakfast, fellowship and sporting clays great way to spend a sunday morning.
