Chaotic Coffee Klatch (tea also available)

My opinion...

Theoretically, yes. Though it may not be someone looking to scam, per se. You just never know who could be lurking in any of the thread.

Once a pic is posted, no matter how quickly it's poofed, it can easily be screen grabbed or downloaded, and then shared elsewhere. More often than not this would be done by guys pretending to be gals on other sites and needing consistent pics to go with those personas.

It been easy enough to find the opposite happening here. People using pics from other sites, claiming them as their own.
Another reason for poofing any face pics quickly: deep fake apps are becoming scarily good and easy to use. I just read an expert recommending a few months ago to take all public face pics away from Fb, LinkedIn etc because of that. You never know what someone will do with them.

Deep fake porn might not even be the worst - people are more likely to realise it might be fake. Having someone fake you did something illegal, or said something that makes you look like immoral or liar may be even worse.

Scary what that will do to forensics in the future, or politics….

Just read an interesting text about Alexander von Humboldt and also a bit of a Bertrand Russel (sorry, can't share as it's in Finnish). They didn't limit the it thinking into one field of science. Wish there was more that kind of thinking still today, the world needs that.

Nice when the humanities we required with a degree. Interesting. I recall Humboldt from geography but don’t know of Russel.

You don't even know of Bertrand Russel? 😲 A mathematician, philosopher, user of logic. Started the whole field of logical empiric philosophy and the popularisation of the science.

Humboldt was originally a mining engineer. He collected and named some 10 000 plants. He was the one who first wrote about ecological systems (though without that word), he wrote about cosmos, even climate in addition to all the geological systems - he was very big on systems and why things work as they do. With his brother he founded a new kind of university which is still there. He even researched the settings of mayas and inkas, and opposed slavery (even to the slaveowning US presidents!) as he came to the conclusion that there are no lower and higher races and in the history people had done structures that would have been impossible for the 19th century people.

Completley agree

Not off the top of my head at 4 in the morning 😂

l have a background in geoscience so Humboldt was easier to recall.

Here highschool has at least 1 obligatory course in philosophy, meaning Russel is among the names one can expect educated people to recall at least by name, though people might not remember what he was thinking. Though for you in the US him opposing the Vietnam war very publicly might be something to remember.

I have catch up reading to do. I think we do not do enough of cross science collaboration or ephasis on such in the USA.

It doesn’t really matter how quickly you ‘poof’ a picture, once it is up it can be downloaded anywhere and everywhere. I had this happen to me in 2013 on a site called DeviantArt. My pictures were taken and used on another site that was called ‘Girls I want to fuck.’ It took a long time for me to get the pictures removed but I know that they are still out there. Was I stupid, yes definitely. My dad used to warn me and my brother about FB etc but who listens to parents 😂. I think the best approach is to use unsee.cc to show images. It’s not foolproof but the images do get the viewers IP address as watermarks so it is a deterrent. Also you can see who is viewing the pic (not name or location, just shows a person) and you can set a time for how long you want the pic displayed for.

In High School there is no mandatory philosophy course. In college, we were required to take classes in literature and in my case I took Great Books and Literature. I identified in those days with Jean-Paul Satre. But science and philosophy, literature were more window dressing for science majors. My favorite course was poetry taught by the University's Poet in Resident.

Here in the university (college is not a term used in our school system) in many fields there's no literature classes to have.

But at least in my parents' time there were still strong students societies by the province you're from and not just by your faculty or hobby. (Nope. Nothing called fraternities and sororities here.) So people actually met more people across different fields - my parents even met that way. The province societies have declined since, unfortunately. (Originally, at least still in the 19th century, belonging to one was mandatory.)

Now I went to a university with technology only... And believe me, many would have benefited from more interaction with those studying human sciences etc.

Looking back I relize, that my Bachelor of Science degree was more well rounded than I thought. I even took a class in animal (implied human) behavior through the psycology department, evolution, poetry as well as the mathematics, chemistry, physics and biology classes. I did not appreciate it at the time, but do now.
