Well, and because they've never attempted to learn another language. I got to a marginally functional level of Spanish in HS, and I only got there because much of the logic is more straightforward
the question is how much actually stuck. I took years of latin in middle school and years of spanish in high school. 25-30 years later, I have little to no functional use of either left. I forgot almost everything since I didn't use it I guess. 🤣

Oh, I'm absolutely in the same boat. A few words and phrases, but not nearly enough to be useful.

Lady, I'm American. The benefit being that we don't have to learn a damn thing (as though that's not obvious)
Unfortunately it's been obvious. Not in your case (and I know the differences are vast there), but I haven't ceased to be surprised how many Americans write their native language far worse than I do. I mean, how does one even pass school with that level of grammar?

I still remember how to say "La chica de la camisa roja cuesta cinco dollares" or even what ever color shirt. yeah, my friends loved walking with me and how I interacted with Spanish speaking catcallers lol. 4 years of spanish and the only thing that really stuck was the spanish I used to be a smartass. 🤣

I think it's because American schools don't have the high standards that Europe does!

Well, the most earnest answer I can give is: A) a lot of public schools have lowered their standards simply because they get punished if they don't graduate kids

B) because our educators are overworked and underpaid, students who need the most help don't always get it

C) See above re: America's unique ability to celebrate ignorance.

The country that sent man to the moon with slide rules and hand-written code no longer believes in science either.

This feels entirely on brand.

I'm amazed that I got all the way through 12 grades without being forced to learn any other languages than American English!

There is also another point I don't think anyone mentioned. The purposeful use of informal writing styles. We often speak very differently as well as write very differently due to conventions/group dynamics in different situations. Youth Text speak is a glaring example. It isn't always that they don't know the proper way, but sometimes improper is chosen to mesh with or create that informal dynamic of different situations.

One could even say being helped into learning other languages :) I won't lie and say I always enjoyed learning those languages, but man is it handy later in life :)

Exactly... I used to feel like they just didn't know better.. But after trying harder to understand them.. They are expressing themselves in their own way..
Hey I was a youth once...
Back in the Black and White TV days when I was the remote control and signal gain!!!

Yea, don't let the media fool you. I see it all around me- young people going into the sciences for careers. People I know. Science is alive and well here.

I regret learning at least Italian, my wife's parents were Italian and when my wife is she's really angry with me, she yells at me in Italian. 🤗

Here the minimum curriculum and the standards are set by the state up till junior high and high school (not vocational school). There aren't many national level exams though, except to get the high school diploma. And to qualify for teaching you need a master's degree, including pedagogical studies - not all willing fit in. Rarely anything other than stand-ins are not qualified.

They are underpaid, though, in most cases. But they don't get punished for kids not graduating.
