It's the antimeridian or 180th meridian which goes between some of the NZ islands. and the International Date Line, which mostly follows that meridian "snakes around national borders to maintain date consistency within the territories of Russia, the United States, Kiribati, Fiji and New Zealand." (also Wiki, for the same reason)

I just assumed he was confusing the prime meridian with the international dateline

Yes. I was slow to realize which error was being made... but I KNOW Nebs has some trouble just understanding time zones and I could see his confusion was going to make her more confused.
Trying to help reduce the chaos.
