I never knew that about the facility destroyed in hurricane Andrew. Is this the hurricane Andrew that happened before Bob in early 90s (maybe very late 80’s)? 1 pregnant python can do a lot of damage. As far as over population and destruction of native wildlife goes. Most of the programs I have seen are probably outdated. OR I only remember hearing about irresponsible pet owners. And I had no fucking clue that FL had a problem with capybaras. I’m going to google… and start filling out adoption applications 😂.
it is wild. now don't get me wrong, pet owners aren't a complete myth, and there were sightings in the 80s, Andrew isn't solely to blame, both were happening simultaneously but the boom happened following andrew, and tossing 1000 is significant to that. no one will prove who caused exactly what percent, but andrew is very relevant to many invasive species

Bob was before Andrew, but small. Andrew destroyed 100s of animal facilities, So many things got out that day from all the different facilities, mambas, gaboons, big cats, so many monkeys and baboons, invasive frogs and lizards and birds. I think we got kind of lucky. Imagine a black mamba problem rather than pythons. It is easy to find people willing to hunt pythons for a chance to place in the contests to win the reward money. How many of those would go for a chance at $500 to hunt a mambas.

Though capybaras aren't really a problem, more interesting. They try to catch them when they can, but just small breeding communities living their lives, nothing like pythons. There are also Ibis breeding groups from Andrew. Some new types of parrots here. The miami zoo was heavily damaged, so who really knows all of it. it is really interesting to see what we know played out, again though as we discover more, it will be hard to pin the blame on one thing. even the smaller hurricanes have some escapees sometimes. good luck with catching birds, snakes, lizards, frogs, rodents.

I didn't read the posts above, I know how surprising it'd be to hear this from me, but from what little I glanced, am I right to assume our @Strixaluco is big brains? She can be our residential chaos scientist. We do have lots of "for science" in here. I'm looking at you two @Justadesperatewifeandmom and @MrsNaughtyCat
I am only here for the perverted science. I have goals here. lol I will be happy to assist chaos science of course.

It’s wicked interesting!!! I love animals and nature. And you are a well of knowledge!

I can’t imagine capybaras being an invasive species, but I didn’t even know they were living wild in FL until 20 minutes ago.

I don’t do poisonous snakes. I think people that handle them must have brass balls. Thank god it was pythons is right. 😬

When you all win an IgNobel prize for "the science of butt stuff" I'm gonna brag about knowing you way back when.
Dang, might be some stiff competition for the butt stuff science. Cruising through the list the first two biology prizes were sperm related and the 2000 medicine prize was for "Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Male and Female Genitals During Coitus and Female Sexual Arousal"

I fucking love science.

So when I see chorizo in stores, it's either the hard kind that sort of looks like pepperoni, which is Spanish I think?
And there also is confusion at times between chorizo and chourico, which is a fully cooked (smoked) Portuguese sausage. And I've seen where the pronunciation can be (or is) the same, though not by my Portuguese grandmother.

In southeastern New England, with the large Portuguese population, in the stores you'll see Chourico and Linguica just as often as you'll see Chorizo.

I didn't know until years after I saw one. I told the story here before of how at a small college party, we were playing pool in the home owners game room, which was like all windows, and I saw one by the woods, but had no idea what it was. I was trying to explain this mutant cocker spaniel giant rat ROAS thing, and it was determined by the others I was just really high. It wasn't until years later, we went to the silver springs wildlife center and there was the cocker spaniel roas being ridden by a duck. I am like there that thing, remember that party. And that is when I learned they are capybara and there is indeed a small population outside of Gainesville, because um they lost all their capybara in Andrew.

Do you ever listen to the podcast There’s No Such Thing as a Fish? I think you’d like it.. and I think they’ve had the founder of the IgNobel prize on it
