Chaotic Coffee Klatch (tea also available)

So...I don't really disagree with this at all on a fundamental level. (Plus I'm really interested in the history of clothing, etc., and you can't study that much without seeing the effect of class and race and gender on clothing norms).

But on the other hand, I love wearing dresses. 🤣

And I personally think that everyone should wear what she/he/they want on their own time, and that everyone should choose professions in which the clothing norms fit well with one's own clothing desires if at all possible.

But I also think that while one may want to smash the patriarchy, and hey, who doesn't?, you have to pick your battles, and clothes signal something about you, especially when you're young and just establishing yourself as what you want to be. If I were an artist, I would not wear a business suit because that would be out of place. If I'm going to work on Wall St, I'm going to wear that suit.

I'm for practical patriarchy-smashing, and one of the things that I do is contribute both financially and with clothes to a couple of organizations that provide professional clothes for young women (mostly) who can't afford them. And then when they all get their cool jobs, we can smash the patriarchy from inside.

Which just made me laugh 😃

what i can see having at least a part in it is patriarchy but i can't see where white supremacy and racism have parts in it (am not against the thought that they might have a part in it but from my point of you i can't see where this part is)
Hmm just bc you can't see it it doesn't mean it's not there. You won't see it. The norms benefit white people

The standards of professionalism, according to American grassroots organizer-scholars Tema Okun and Keith Jones, are heavily defined by white supremacy culture—or the systemic, institutionalized centering of whiteness. In the workplace, white supremacy culture explicitly and implicitly privileges whiteness and discriminates against non-Western and non-white professionalism standards related to dress code, speech, work style, and timeliness.

We are taught to identify white supremacy with violent segregationist groups such as the Ku Klux Klan and their modern-day equivalents. Okun and Jones, however, introduce a different approach to thinking about white supremacy. In their definition, the term describes a series of characteristics that institutionalize whiteness and Westernness as both normal and superior to other ethnic, racial, and regional identities and customs. While people often don’t view this theorization of white supremacy as violent, it can lead to systemic discrimination and physical violence. Source

Here's one law review article. It's about these same concepts in the legal field

What do y'all think about Botox and other facial adjustment surgeries?
Idk enough about the subject to give an educated opinion but my uneducated one 😂 is that it makes me nervous to inject anything into the body. But i do know its used for medical reasons so I'm all for that. In terms of for beauty reasons, hmmm part of me feels like we need to learn how to be okay with aging bc its part of the cycle of life but then if there are tools you can use why not. Recently i thought about botox in my face 😂 i don't have an issue per say but i do have some expression wrinkles from frowning i guess 😂😂😂 ...honestly at the end of the day as justa says is yoour money.
Well, actually, the patriarchy is all men. Including me. Whether I like it or not, I experience institutional privilege by virtue of being male. If you and I go out for dinner, more likely than not I'll be the one given the check. You may come from a more privileged background than me, and you may have a higher level of academic attainment than me, and you may have a greater salary level than me. But I have a penis, and the patriarchy means people tend to assume I'm in charge and have the money and authority in that situation.

I hate those assumptions as much as anyone, and as an individual I question and challenge them publicly. Doesn't change the fact that I benefit from it, whether I want to or not. But there will be an awful lot of men who walk serenely through life without even noticing consciously that they are benefiting from inherent patriarchal privilege, especially when it's outweighed by other factors (race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status etc). The patriarchy isn't the only status and privilege game in town.

Men can't help being part of the existing patriarchy, and men need to understand that. But men are also individuals who by their actions can either reinforce it or challenge it. That is where we get into 'Not All Men' territory.
Thank you for explaining this so well. Now everyone replace the patriarchy for white supremacy, men for white people and women for BIPOC and same concept.

I hate the whole men being treat better just bc men v. Women like the example you gave about the restaurant. One time me and a guy friend were out of town and we went to eat. When we left and headed to the car this man that was cleaning the windows says to my friend "all ready boss" mind you I was the one walking to the driver seat (because we were in a town my friend had never been to and I knew my way around so I was the one driving). I told him (kind of laughing and joking) hey don't you see I'm the one driving? Why did you call him boss and not me? And then he proceeds to basically call me little boss. Like i still didn't get full on boss. 😂😂😂

Another time I was in LA and if you've never been there, there are street vendors that sell fruit for snacks. So i saw one and I stopped to get one. And the guy says what can I get you boss. So then I wrote a fb post about how that day I had experienced equality for the first time in my life when he said that 😂😂

Anyway these are all funny examples about how it plays out in ways that doesn't affect women but it doesn't mean I can't take notice

I agree 100% with all this, I just had to point out the irony of you starting it with “Well, actually” - the hallmark of mansplaining 🤣
Hahahaha sooo true i love it (not mansplaining) but the irony rn
femsplaining is a thing too
I never heard of that and I don't think that's a thing or it has the same effects of mansplaining
