I had a situation about a year or so ago that was something like that. I guess they call it "sextortion."

Out of the blue, I got an email that addressed me by name, and it said something like "Hey there, we were able to install spyware on your computer and we've seen all the porn videos you've been watching and websites you've been visiting. Wow, you have some unusual tastes! If you don't send us $500 in bitcoin, we're going to send a couple of those videos to everyone in your email address book. And if you don't believe us, is this one of your passwords: *****?"

I must admit I panicked. I had some gay porn and some of my own masturbation videos on my computer and up on Pornhub, including one of me selfsucking. (I had posted that here--maybe some of you remember it. :) ) I quickly deleted my Pornhub account. I wasn't going to pay them, because I knew if I did there would be no end to it---but I was freaking out. They had my name, and the password they listed WAS a password I had used before (although not at any sex sites.)

After some internet research, though, I figured out it was a scam. What had happened is that there was indeed a data breech of some website I was registered for. So, the scammers had my name, email address, and a password I had used on some site. But that's it. They had never hacked into my computer, and I think I had already been notified by the site they hacked and had changed my password there.

They basically just figured everyone (or at least every guy) had porn video history on their computer, and would be worried about that being exposed. Which I was.

So I just ignored it, and nothing ever happened. I did get a couple more similar emails from other scammers, but I just ignored them too.

I work in IT, and that scam was going around where worked a while back. I got several panicked calls from people to me directly because they wanted to know if it was real or not.

Yeah, I'm reasonably computer savvy and not too gullible--but when they had my name, email address, and a unique password of mine, that hit me pretty hard when I first read it.
