Another day at the bird feeder

Bright red on a white backdrop
huge berries fallen from a bush
but moving, darting, spatting

Went out during the blizzard to make sure the furnace exhaust pipe wasn't buried. It's pointing down toward the base of the foundation because that's the only place the wind won't put back pressure on the pipe and shut down the furnace. Anyway, I look down at the steam created hollow in the snow and there's a dove huddled up in there shivering. How miserable. Of course it sees me and flies off into the maelstrom. There are 3 or 4 doves hanging around now, ground feeders. They're cool. They can stay. :)

If I slip on the ice and break my neck while trying to get to the bird feeder, will they say the birds killed me?

They will at least, peck your eyes out. The early bird gets the eye.

I see so damn many of the new condensing boiler exhausts coming out of the side of buildings. They create little glaciers in real chilly weather. It's all kinda nasty to me. My exhaust goes straight up over the roof and there's no mess around the building. Snow clearing isn't required.

Per the thread, a nice adult bald eagle soared by this afternoon.

I saw on of those long thin brown birds that love to run through the underbrush.

They rarely ever fly and I forget what they're called.

If I remember rightly, they have yellow eyes.

I should get out the bird books...

I think it's a Brown Thrasher.

At any rate, the deer scared it off.

Then I had to scare the deer off.

Then the Cardinals returned...

Now I have a little black and white bird with red splashes to identify.
I'm not seeing it in the books.

The word is out.

The ground is still covered in white ice and

the variety and volume of diners at the feeder is increasing.

And to think, I was going to take ads out in The Birdcage Times...

Put out another cake of suet yesterday.

It's funny that they don't even really fly off anymore when I am replenishing.
They sit in the forsythia thicket less than six feet away from me
and as soon as I turn my back, they are all over it.

Well, except the cardinals. They are a skittish bird.
I'd be willing to bet that I could go all
"Bird Man of Alcatraz" with
some of the sparrows.

My feeder continues to get destroyed almost every day by squirrels if I put suet in it.

Get cardonals,jays,doves,finches,woodpeckers,sparrows,titmouse,chicadees,and a few others.Critters come around at night.:D

I have three things,

A separate suet holder
A squirrel-proof feeder
A .22 by the back door

Squirrels are not that much of a problem.
Once a year or so, I have to set traps for raccoons though.

The hawk was sitting on the feeder again today looking in the window. Too fucking cool. :)
