Yes, it has been going on for ever, difference is now social media has made it an art form.

I see it as less statements and more actions. For example, (trying to keep this generic because this is not the place for politics) an event happens and someone is wronged and it becomes a media talking point. People that pile on, often to an absurd level to show how much they are against whatever the grievance is. To the point where you know it's less about supporting the wronged and more about improving their standing in the mob that begins to form.
