I don't know if it is a country specific virtue, plenty of evidence things are alive and well in most countries. Certainly we have volunteer state emergency service, rural fire brigade, ambulance and first aid, surf life saving, sea rescue, army reserve, etc as some of the more demanding ones, plus all the other organisations doing good work. Mums and Dads organising junior sports etc. Maybe more recent arrivals to the country need a bit of guidance in getting into things. No point sitting on your backside and being a spectator when things need to happen.

A few efforts by a large number of people gets things done. Initial searching is best done with numbers and technology. It's a large but relatively sparsely populated country, you just have to get things done first and then work out the details later.
