I would say that certain types of people gravitate to "the industry", and that the industry itself might not have been the primary problem in this case.

It might also serve as a reminder that the world is not all rainbows and unicorns after all. If you want peace, love, stability and all that, well that is something that you must reclaim from an ocean of chaos. If you just drift by, hoping the the best, things will usually not turn out that well.
