They actually can't afford not to. The spectre of political prosecution looms large in all of this.

Instead, they will forgive the sinners this time and enact rules and policies to try and prevent it from happening again in the future. The issue there will be how close to McCarthyism can they go without it actually being or smelling like McCarthyism.

I don't think as a nation we can forgive these crimes without trashing our principles of equality before the law. These transgressions are insults to the law itself. I think Barr has to restore confidence in the DOJ and the FBI. Sweeping this all under the rug will pretty much destroy the Constitution and public faith in the integrity of their government institutions. It means this kind of thing will happen again. At least the half of the population that still gives a shit about America aren't going to accept a whitewash.

They can find all sort of "offenses". That doesn't mean they'll do anything about them.

It's not about what they find. It's about what they'll do with what they find. Right now, there's no will to do anything because any prosecutions will be viewed as politically motivated even if they aren't.
