(CN) – For many victims, last week’s incarceration of sex offender Jeffrey Epstein represents belated justice after more than a decade of impunity and governmental complicity.

Beneath that gloomy surface, however, an even darker picture emerges: federal prosecutions of those who trafficked children for sex dropped 26.7% over the last year.

The startling numbers appeared Tuesday in a report from the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University.

“If the present pace of such prosecutions continues, the fiscal 2019 total will be 162, compared to 221 last year,” TRAC’s report states.

Before criticism over the deal ended his tenure, Acosta pushed policies at the Department of Labor that pushed to divert resources from the mission of combating human trafficking. TRAC notes that individual U.S. attorneys have discretion over which cases to bring, but that prosecutors have increasingly declined referrals of cases involving child sex trafficking.

Still, the former prosecutor emphasized, the Trump administration’s antagonism to an immigrant visa program meant to protect sex-trafficking survivors could put anti-trafficking enforcement in jeopardy.

“In order to make these cases, you need the victims to be willing to appear as witnesses, that willingness is provided because these women see a path to a better life by cooperating with the U.S. government,” said the ex-prosecutor, who requested anonymity to discuss the views of career Justice Department officials.

WASHINGTON (CN) – Advisory committees for the Environmental Protection Agency have been stripped of academic scientists while stakeholders from industries the agency regulates have filled out those spots, in a shift that scientists warned Tuesday could upend oversight of environmental matters in favor of profit-driven motives.

The flow of scientists ousted from advisory committees – bodies which provide impartial guidance on public health policies spearheaded by the EPA – has been ongoing since 2017.

The shift from science to stakeholder focus began after former EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt remade the advisory panels in 2017 following a White House executive order directing the “streamlining” of all federal programs.

The order aligned with Pruitt’s own “back-to-basics” deregulatory agenda that has continued under current Administrator Andrew Wheeler, who assumed the role after Pruitt resigned amid a flurry of ethics investigations last July.

Under Wheeler, the EPA eliminated the Office of the Science Advisor, which provided critical data on environmental standards. He also disbanded the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee, which studied the impact of particulate matter in the air. Most of that committee’s members were university researchers.

The number of scientists on the EPA’s Science Advisory Board has plummeted 27% since 2017, according to a report published Tuesday by the Government Accountability Office. The Board of Science Counselors – a body which has informed EPA policy since 1962 – saw scientist membership plummet 45%.

Before you jump out there calling people stupid because that’s what you love doing, let’s take a look at the fact you’re not exactly the brightest crayon in the box yourself.

so which was it? you're stupid and/or you lied, or you didn't read the article?

as it stands, your ability to recognise intelligence is... shall we say 'challenged'?

now, off to clean glass. the pup has left nose and paw prints on the glass door.

Hahahaha.... Your fucking ass has some personal issues if you like running around calling people stupid all the time to make yourself feel superior in intellect. But, then again, I expect nothing less from an atheist.

WASHINGTON — A top Trump administration official said Tuesday that the famous inscription on the Statue of Liberty welcoming immigrants into the country is about “people coming from Europe” and that America is looking to receive migrants “who can stand on their own two feet.”

The comments from Ken Cuccinelli, the acting director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, came a day after the Trump administration announced it would seek to deny green cards to migrants who seek Medicaid, food stamps, housing vouchers or other forms of public assistance. The move — and Cuccinelli’s defense — prompted an outcry from Democrats and immigration advocates who said the policy would favor wealthier immigrants and disadvantage those from poorer countries in Latin America and Africa.

“This administration finally admitted what we’ve known all along: They think the Statue of Liberty only applies to white people,” tweeted former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke, a Democratic presidential candidate.

Cuccinelli said in an interview with CNN on Tuesday night that the Emma Lazarus poem emblazoned on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty referred to “people coming from Europe where they had class based societies where people were considered wretched if they weren’t in the right class.”

Border agent who called migrants 'subhuman' pleads guilty to intentionally running over migrant
USA Today|1 hour ago
TUCSON — A former U.S. Border Patrol agent charged with running over a Guatemalan migrant along the Arizona-Mexico border and then lying about it has pleaded guilty and faces up to a year in prison, according to a deal with prosecutors.
Bowen agreed to plead guilty to a misdemeanor for violating the rights of Antonin Lopez Aguilar, a 23-year-old migrant from Guatemala.

Bowen acknowledged that he intentionally ran over Lopez Aguilar on Dec. 3, 2017, when, as an agent, he had tried to detain him after entering the U.S. illegally near Nogales.

"During my apprehension of (Antonin Lopez Aguilar), I intentionally struck him with an unreasonable amount of force. My actions when I struck A.L.-A. were not justified and violated his rights protected by the Constitution of the United States," Bowen admitted, according to the document detailing the deal with prosecutors.
Prosecutors also agreed to dismiss a charge against him for having lied about striking Lopez Aguilar in a report.
how does someone get a plea deal to call intentionally hitting someone with his vehicle (sounds like at least an aggravated assault!) a 'misdemeanour'? and lying about the charge of common assault - physically striking the same man is just ignored?
