Happy birthday. X

Books in general though. Catch22 is on tele at moment, need to reread.

Current book. History of Wales. (Fiction. Non fiction in rotation normally. Satanic verses soon as I've never read it and it was an anniversary recently of the Fatawa.)

Balti triangle or Rushholme curry mile in Manchester? Can it be on our road trip... Along with 'in Bruges'

Come to Bruges. Pretty amazing and inexpensive. Usually I go to Brussels and spend all my time at Cantillon but there is amazing beer all over the country.

I am so jealous of SL right now. Have never been to Berlin but it supposed to be weird AF. Did you know Anton Newcombe of The Brian Jonestown Massacre now lives there? Really good Parts Unknown featuring him where he cooks for Tony.

Helloooooo I’m here and it’s hot as hell. Had a very long day... have been on a private street art tour including the East Side Gallery ( on a section of remaining Berlin Wall) did some thrifting in a very large vintage store called Humana , ate pizza, drank beer and have bowled in a vintage style bowling alley from the 30’s. Yesterday did some historical sites and ate in a very cool courtyard restaurant called Panama ( drank cocktails). Nothing too weird because my 7 year old is here... but I’d definitely like to come back again. I’ve been recommended to look out for a film called “ B Side” which explores the alternative scene here including the David Bowie years. There finishes my review. X ( my husband is always trying to get me to go to Bruges.... Eurostar have had a sale on for reference)

You are killing me right now. So jealous but happy for you. And I like traveling with my kids. Really fun to see them experience amazing places for first time. Plus, they like museums and pubs.

Brugges is great. Haven't been there for years. Moules marinières and beer takes some beating.

Turns out I can’t even spell it!!!

Thanks for all my birthday wishes by the way... I really appreciate it. Who’s next to hit the road ?

I'm heading for Ireland on Wednesday. Presently I can hear Glasto, 5 miles away as the crow flies!

I think Polranny is Flemish not Welsh after all... Bruges is probably my most favouritest place in the world to eat and drink - especially close to Christmas when everywhere is decorated so wonderfully.

Belated Happy Birthday and hope you had a wonderful time in Berlin!

30 squid for a silly wank, that pricier than some air bnb

Not a mistake I’d make again - I stayed somewhere that was about thirty quid when stopping in brum for an evening do... it was only my monies for that one, no way would I stay somewhere that cheap when the company is picking up the bill...

Anywhos - I didn’t think it would be that bad because at the time you could find premier inns and whatnot for £30-£40... I was wrong... it was basically a homeless hostel... and when trying to see how my outfit looked in the mirror, I ended up moving the bed to stand in the right spot. That was a mistake I also haven’t made since - sometimes you don’t want to know what sort of shit you are sleeping on top of...

Shame - because it’s a gorgeous Victorian building, originally built to provide half decent rooms to migrant workers, mostly Irish, at a time many traditional B&Bs would have those ‘no blacks, no irish’ signs up... which as the daughter of an Irish migrant worker obviously resonated with me... Anywhos Highgate Hotel if you want the experience of bemused holidays makers who have booked on Expedia and are complaining about the mould while rubbing shoulders with those just glad to have scrapped together £27 for a bed for the night and not be sleeping in a cardboard box. It was originally a Rowton House based on the London model...

In Down & Out In Paris and London, George Orwell wrote about lodging houses: "The best are the Rowton Houses, where the charge is a shilling, for which you get a cubicle to yourself, and the use of excellent bathrooms…The Rowton Houses are splendid buildings, and the only objection to them is the strict discipline.”

I didn’t get the full experience, when they were housing migrant workers there were over 800 bedrooms, there are now 250 ensuites... it’s been a gradual reduction, in 1973 there 500 (65p a night!) and in 1978 it was down to 450 although the Sunday Times reported there were only nine baths for those 450 souls...

Perhaps I should go back... I saw very little of it, arriving with just time to change into my outfit and discover I was sleeping on top of condoms and needles... then I got back late and was out the door early... it’s probably somewhere I’d appreciate a bit more with time to roam...

No swingers sex dungeons though...

No other thread does! Long live Hello from London :D

How interesting... I’ve only just recently read it. The thing that put a slight dampener on it for me was knowing that Orwell had access to money at any time had he wanted it ( his aunt was in Paris etc). Although he suffered real hardship and knew hunger it was still a game he was playing... he could have called a halt to it at any time.

Oh wow! Probably been 20 years since I read that one. That and Naked Lunch by Burroughs had quite the impact on me.

I haven’t read Naked Lunch yet - I should rectify that...

On the choo choo to London, managed to work from home this morning but have an important meeting this afternoon and I barely slept last night . Struggling to keep my eyes open - wish me luck in a) minimising the yawning when dull people say dull things in my meeting and b) getting home without falling asleep on the train and waking up in Scotland.... although there are worse places to wake up...

Sounds awesome. Except the work part. I love sleeping on trains. I always some how manage to wake up right before stop. Sometimes kids would wake me up.

Yes. I used to get rat arsed when living in Blackheath. Last train from Charing X , fell asleep, woke up in Erith (twice) and once in Hastings . Blame it on Young's Special. Circle line useful if you're really tired, i have even been known to sleep through the rush hour..

Let's not forget the Orwell was an Eton scholar so even if he was not monied his little black book of contacts would have been worth a few quid if/when tapped.
