Hello from London!

Also not seen the remake - I love Oldboy but it’s not my favourite of the trilogy... that honour goes to Sympathy for Lady Vengeance even though it’s ultra violent which isn’t normally my thing...

How’s the weekend been, AP?

What’s your type of film?

Didn't enjoy Sympathy, and I forget why

Fabulous weekend getting to say hello to a Sir :D. How’s yours?

Films...Eclectic... cop out answer I know....

I prefer European cinema over Hollywood because I like stuff that leaves me still thinking about it at the end and Hollywood has a tendency to tie up all loose endings for a nice tidy test audience approved ending...

Favourites (ish - list changes all the time..)

Sex and Lucia
The Death of Mr Lazarescu
Good Bye, Lenin!
Lovers of the artic circle
Twelve angry men
Timecrimes (Spanish - and I still have no fucking idea what was going on... anyone knows - answers on a postcard...)

I did write a description for these but couldn’t decide if they were spoiler free..

I am so hignorant. Moving pictures is one thing, next you'll be telling me that these moving pictures are now coloured. I have only seen Twelve angry men

Sort it out! Sex and Lucia features Sex with Lucia... she’s very hot...

Also it’s a glorious and unexpected film... if we subscribe to the idea there are really are only a handful of stories in the world, this is the quest... but a beautiful one, you expect it to be the leading mans quest - it’s not, Julio Medem worships women in a way few male writer/directors do (although almodovar probably pips him to the post with his bonkers women...) and they always get the best, juiciest, most complex characters in his films... thus this starts as a hetro love story but this film is really about two glorious women stumbling through grief with heartbreaking rawness... it’s a stunning masterpiece... I’ll get some popcorn in, nip round for film night ;)

Bloody hell! I hoped I might be in with a chance on a film convo but not a hope. I’ve only seen one grown up film this year ( The Favourite) but if you want to chat about Mary Poppins, Dumbo or any other kids film I’m your woman. I’m hoping that’s going to change though now I’ve bagged myself a babysitter.

Anyway just to cement my un-coolness I saw Matilda in the west end on Friday and wait for it..... saw Billy Joel on Saturday. I know right? How the fuck am I daring to show my face on this thread? ( while we’re at it, I don’t drink Chai Latte, I think Avacados are overrated... but not as overrated as Bob Dylan. I know I own a BD album on vinyl which I bought from a charity shop.... and you can say “ thrifted” which instantly ups the cool points but I don’t like actually listening to it.). I would rather jump around my living room to Neil Diamond, Dolly Parton and probably Shirley Bassey rather than pay money to watch Dylan.

Also I don’t like Harry Potter and I’ve only watched one episode of GoT and I fell asleep. SO THERE!

Jealous of Matilda... anything to do with Tim Minchin is Uber cool :D

Yay for the babysitter... does this mean more London lit meet ups likely in the near future?

Berlin

Anywhoo........;)

I’m off to Berlin this week and I would love any recommendations of fiction that’s Berlin based if anyone knows any.

My German film recommendation would be “ The Lives of Others” from my pre child life. And if you’d like something a bit more current then Gods Own Country on Netflix which is set in Yorkshire ( obvs) and is fucking gorgeous.

Goodbye Lenin! Although maybe not terribly useful... :D. Woman falls into a coma in East Germany before the fall of the Berlin Wall, wakes after it has come down and capitalism has Coca Cola posters going up everywhere - except her family are convinced the shock will kill her and it descends into farce as they try to keep up the illusion she is still living behind the iron curtain...

You up town girl.

Dylan is a poet (Bob or Thomas take your pick)

The after sunset, before sunrise trilogy is lovely (but I have a man crush on Ethan Hawk [what an actor]) {training day anyone?}

Not watched training day but the gentleness of the sunset trilogy is indeed gorgeous- still not got round to Boyhood... that’s supposed to a lovely film...

I am totally with you, SL. I was landed with Incredibles 2 and am in line for Toy Story 4, i have neither read nor watched anything Potterish, saw I GoT just once (i hate to see dragons fighting one another , were endangered!).
My SO and I had to go to a Peter Rabbit matinee in Ireland so we could be in tune with grandkids and nearly missed the last (only) bus home. We thoroughly enjoyed that one mind)
Early Dylan is Ok but I wouldn't pay to go see him. I will happily dance around to Dolly's grumpy and western, sing along to Neil Diamond and maybe twirl with Shirl.
This shows my age, best concert I went to was Georgie Fame in Swansea, Manfred Mann the following week was good too!
My favourite remaining vinyl is Alice's Restaurant - Arlo Guthrie

Comments in recent posts:

  • Cinema - not been in years. People drink too much pop, then need to wee frequently, talk too much
  • Bob Dylan - early BD is great, fantastic songwriter, hate his voice. Can't stand Willie Nelson's voice either but that's besides the point
  • Billy Joel - saying nothing because I'm going to see Nile Rodgers at the weekend and, like Billy Joel, he's very good at what he does and I reckon it will be a good show and may 'throw some shapes'
  • Love kids films but for foreign films, Kurosawa is The Boss, Jean de Florette & Manon des Sources are beautiful, Jacques Tati was a genius but check out Micmacs for delightful quirkiness
  • Avocados - have started liking them, don't know why

Avocadoes. Yes I like them now, must be Allia's influence. I now buy wonkies from Morrison's, if failing to ripen cut in half, remove stone wrap in cling film and zap in microwave for 30 secs. Dunk in iced water if necessary . Serve mashed on toast with lemon juice and chili flakes with sliced strawberries

This thread has really taken off. I like avocados just for the guac aspect. In fact I made some last night with fish tacos.

And Billy Joel, Bob Dylan and Neil Diamond are all pretty fucking rad.

I love kids movies. I think I am taking my kids to see Toy Story 4 today. And like the last 3 Toy Story movies I will probably cry.

Probably my favorite Dolly Parton song

Signs of the times: forky in TS4 a home made from plastic fork and pipecleaners, most common knife injury in A&E , cut hand from slicing avocado. Middle class or what! My manor about to be inundated with green/floral wellied, avocado slicing glasto pilgrims.
