It means he works without a paycheck for your benefit.

The difference between "contingent" and "furloughed" is that eventually a furloughed employee will get paid.

Lawyers who work contingent sometimes NEVER get paid. You want to hear another fact that most people don't know? Lawyers "advance" fees and costs to their clients who can't pay them prior to the case being resolved.

You know what happens when the case goes against the client after the lawyer advanced those fees/costs?

Yeah, the lawyer eats them. No pay AND he has to shell out for the privilege.
