It has evolved over the years. 50s and 60s were large gang fights with dozens of participants using clubs, knives, chains ... you know the whole West Side Story thing. There were isolated cases of kids shooting others in school, but guns were generally harder to come by then. The ones kids could get were as likely to blow up in their hands as not (Saturday Night Specials).
What you're seeing now is the direct result of the NRA buying judges and politicians to make more durable guns easier for kids to get.
