Happy Groundhog Day! Does anyone have big plans for the occasion?

My plan for the day was to pay off our home mortgage. I just got back from the bank. The loan should be history now, but it'll take another month or so to shake out details like the escrow account. But then, after 31+ years of paying, what's another month?

Congrats. always a major milestone.

The best treatment I find for a cold is drinking plenty of liquids (I favour a nice 12-year old pot-still) and staying in bed for two or three days with a warm friend. It doesn't cure the cold, but it makes having it worthwhile.
I would love nothing better than to be able to lay in bed with my best girl, my pug, snuggled up and watching shitty horror movies, but no one else ever volunteers at the food pantry! Today it was just me and my three kids there. I don't know what they would do if I didn't show up.
I'll never kick this cold because I never get a day off. Ok I do get Sunday off but since that's my only day off I spend that day cleaning.

WooHoo that is cause to celebrate!

It cannot come quickly enough !

How about a "give the kids a broom & the vacuum cleaner" day ?
:)

Marmota monax - quite toothsome with applesauce or jelly, as I recall. More meat than a chicken and it's own diet is infinitely preferable to contemplate.

As for a celebration of the day, nope. The little guy just promised six more weeks of snow and can celebrate himself for all I care.

Unless some stupid ***** has decided to import the marmot with a view to we having our own Groundhog Day, we don't have anything like it. That isn't to say we do not have any ground-burrowing animals, we have, but they do not usually have the same effect.

And now, I think it's time fo a cup of Tea.

Don't try picking up a badger like a groundhog.

They're not like the characters in The Wind in the Willows.

I hope Teresa May brought some good tea back from China.

I know this sounds odd but my favorite cure for a cold or any other virus is hot grapefruit juice and sleep. I don't know why grapefruit juice. Heck, I don't even like grapefruit but for some strange reason I find it comforting. There are reports that it works for others . . .

Cardiologists now regularly recommend that Lime or Grapefruit juice be avoided with some cardiac prescriptions, but I can't remember which 'scrips.

Sleep on the other hand is good - always.

I'd heard grapefruit (it is supposed to accentuate or amplify the effects of wuite a few drugs, but lime? Say it isn't so!

Since I don't take any cardiac medication, that's a non-issue.

Did you know that recently a sequel to TWITW was published? The authoress is a Hugo winning Australian woman who thought that delightful as the original was, it needed updating to current sensitivities. So she added a couple of lady characters, one very sensible and one unfortunately like Toad. So far it's delightful. My favorite phrase? Toad had reverted to being 'an unmanageable ass'. Y'gotta love it!

It's called On the River Bank--Kij Johnson

Congratulations, that is a tremendous achievement. :)

I don't take heart medication but a couple of years ago I was on an anti-inflammatory that said no grapefruit juice. Was hard as grapefruit juice is one of my favorite drinks in the summer. I was glad when I was off that med.

Thanks. It just took a long time.

I've heard about interactions with grapefruit juice, but not with lime juice. That could put a real crimp in you refreshment plans if your plans involve margaritas or gimlets.

We've been extorted by our own State government. We got a 10-day seizure notice for non-payment of a small sum of tax money. It was, by our recollection, the first correspondence we had with the State on the problem. The details are ludicrous.

I talked with the State idiots yesterday and concluded that they didn't have enough information to answer questions. It was a polite way of saying 'you obviously don't know what the fuck you're talking about.' My wife spent her afternoon talking to them today and got a *COMPLETELY* different story about the charges--dates, amounts, cause and statute were all different from the explanation I got yesterday.

The amount of money is pretty trivial and given time I would have had an attorney stop things, but my go-to attorney is in the State legislature, which is meeting now. We just payed their demands to stop the seizure. I need to go wash off.

Well, that sucks  I hate it when things come up out'a the blue like that, being blindsided is what makes it worse...ludicrous details and flip-flops don't help either.

It's worse when spokesman B does not know what spokesman A has told you.

That really sucks but at least you caught it. There's some nightmare stories about tax stuff. Alls well that ends well at least.

Thanks for your thoughts. I annoyed the hell out of me that it happened on the same day I payed of the mortgage.

Well Winter Storm Warning right now for me. Rain right now but dropping into the minuses and dumping snow tonight and tomorrow. So right now my beloved is off doing guy things with his buddies so I have migrated to a coffee shop with my laptop and I'm enjoying the ambiance of rain on the windows and an endless supply of coffee and muffins and a friend on her way.

Yeah, it's things like that which can turn a perfectly well-meaning liberal into a gnarly reactionary. Dealing with any bureaucracy can be a study in Purgatory, governmental or corporate.

The French have the bureaucracy from Hell, not Purgatory.

President Macron is trying to change it. He's like Sisyphus rolling a rock uphill only to see it slip backwards again and again. People dealing with French officials feel like they are trying to appease a capricious and vengeful God, not trying to comply with regulations.

Heaven is where the police are British, the cooks are French, the mechanics German, the lovers Italian and it's all organised by the Swiss. Hell is where the chefs are British, the mechanics French, the lovers Swiss, the police German and it's all organised by the Italians.

When hiking the High Sierras, watch for piles of marmot poop. Marmots love to shit from scenic vistas. Marmot loos are all Kodak moments.

Here at 4000ft / 1200m on the western slope, we lack groundhogs, marmots, badgers (AFAIK), prairie dogs, moles. We DO have gophers, or did till a neighbor's aggressive cat proved her worth. But "gopher day" doesn't really have a nice ring, does it?

Don't take the Silverton train out of Durango CO. There are no views, unlike the Cumbres & Toltec out of Chama NM. But the first few miles north of town, beside the highway, pass through prairie dog cities. Sit by the tracks and await a train. Whenever one passes, zillions of critters pop up to watch.
_____

I slurped a thick quadruple espresso at dawn, took my meds with peanut butter, ran to the post office and grocer, and sipped my partner's mocha over oatcake brunch. Too late for more now, and too early for tawny port. Compromise: I still have Sierra Nevada (brewery) "No Middle Ground" coffee IPAs. Those qualify, right?

Meanwhile, yesterday's cardiologist was encouraging and I *am* doing better, with a bit more stamina, which means I may qualify for surgical work before too long. Oh goody. More eye surgery in a few days, so I may once again be able to see what I'm keyboarding.

We didn't stop at music shops along our travel arc so I didn't buy more 'ukuleles. Maybe next week, after the laser sears my retina again. I can get a concert (alto) 'uke strung linear, and a tenor 'uke strung as a mandola, for about the cost of 3 days meds. Yeah, we can squeeze the budget that far. But no psaltery yet.

Is coffee IPA a weak speedball?
