There are clearly defined criteria to determine separate species, just as there are for genera, orders, phyla, kingdoms, et cetera. International committees of scientists determine what those criteria are, and new species names are subject to peer review. A scientist can't just say there's a new species. It has to be supported by evidence.
The study of viruses has adopted the same terms and procedures as the life sciences for naming things, but viruses are more chemical than biological.
I have been looking since you posted this. I don't see clear cut defined criteria to determine species that go across the board. I am not arguing I just can't find the criteria. Do you have a source?
