At the International Rugby Women's tournament in Sydney Canada upset the hosts and Olympic Champions, Australia to get in the final.

An even bigger surprise in the other Semi, the USA beat the red hot favourites New Zealand.

Then the final, a hard fought but narrow win, 21 to 17,

"Sorry what was that?"

"Canada won - surely not - impossible."

"They did - they beat USA."

"Blimey - there'll be a Tweet demanding a Northern Wall tomorrow."

Oh' and Hookers call the shots in the set pieces (scrums and lineouts).

And everybody calls the referee 'Sir.' Got all that?

This is true - for the first 20 minutes perhaps, then the big guys get overheated and cannot make a contribution. Most International Rugby teams have a couple of players round about 250 pounds (invariably props or locks) and they are a lot leaner than their NFL equivalents.

NFL running backs are probably a bit quicker than Rugby wingers too, especially over the first 15-20 yards. But these days Rugby wingers are probably the larger because they have a significant defensive role as well.

The differences stem from the fact that:

1 A Rugby team has only 15 players plus 7 or 8 substitutes, 3 of which subs must be front rowers) Once substituted a player cannot return.

2 If a player is tackled in Rugby, the game does not stop, the 'phase' continues, thus there is no Down time for the big men to cool off. Halves instead of quarters also make it tougher for the big men.

The more continuous nature of Rugby therefore places a premium on durability and stamina rather than explosive power and speed. Different games, different body types required.

The USA national Rugby team contains a lot of former players of American football (high school and college). They tend to be very good defensively - excellent tackling skills.
