I think we owe Obama a big thanks for the robust gun sales dealers have enjoyed the past 8 years.
No doubt in my mind that if Obama had Democrat majorities in 2015-16, there would have been a major move to limit all gun sales and to ban certain types of guns.
Even hunting guns, which we all know if the real basis for the 2nd Amendment.
But his repeated whining about "common sense" gun laws left the public largely unmoved, mostly because that's who we are as Americans.

Harken back to 2012. After the 2010 shellacking the democrats took, Obama was wandering in the darkness. The democrats had shoved #ShuckNJiveCare down the nations throats and had paid the price. Obama was looking for something, anything, he could latch on to. He had just beaten Romney in the election and felt he had a mandate, but he had no agenda to use that mandate on. And then like a sick gift he was presented with Sandy Hook. NOW he had something to use his mandate on. The democrats were able to recruit a NRA 'A' lister, Manchin of W.VA.. and a republican to push a 'common sense' gun bill through the senate. It all looked pretty good at first, early straw polls indicated they had the votes. And then one by one the senators started peeling away. Yes, the NRA along with the other 2nd amendment rights group were active, but the response from out in the hustings is what turned the tide. Obama lost that one and had pissed away his 'mandate' in doing so. (Very reminiscent of happened to Bush II and his 'amnesty' initiative in 2005.)
