On the other hand, plenty of people hate Obama for not being born in the US, for being a Muslim and for hating the Jews, so I guess we can follow their lead and hate the Jews for killing Christ.

Not vetoing a UN resolution is a signal to Israel's government that building new settlements on the West Bank is hindering the peace process between Israel and the Palestinians.

It reminds Israel's government that the US's support of Israel isn't unconditional. Building NEW settlements, while it might appease Israel's internal hardliners, irritates Israel's friends and supporters.

The Israeli government knew that the absention was coming. They had time to react and even to change, or offer to review, their policy on new settlements if that is what would have been necessary to avoid the embarrassment of this UN resolution.

It doesn't alter the support for Israel. It is just a gentle reminder that friends can become irritated by continued stupidity.

The problem with all that is it doesn't allow the rabid "Obama is a jew-hating muslim" crowd to bitch about yet another Obama "atrocity".

That and the pesky fact that it's consistently been the UN's and the US's position ever since 1967.
But ignoring facts is the only thing that lets them rant.
