The nature of hurt, general or specific, never changes but our perceptions of it and the power we feed it does. The slap across the face stings. Surprises. And quickly fades. But our wondering why we were slapped. Our search for meaning, justification or rationalization keeps it fresh in our minds. Makes the sting linger mentally and emotionally far longer than it does physically.

It doesn't matter who slapped you. You're almost invariably making the sting last. Why are you hurting yourself Lizzie? Why won't you stop?
