hi

when i opened the toilet door in the train, the guy inside just ejaculated and sheepishly walked out.

Watching Theresa May spew crap that is directly in contradiction to known and well-documented facts regarding grammar schools that she must know to be untrue in such a brazen way I can't help but wonder how much of her party's campaign funding is coming from private schooling corporations.

This should be in the politics thread but GRRRR.

Examples;
"We want equality of opportunity, not equality of outcome."
Grammar schools necessarily create unequal opportunity in education and to add to that they massively reinforce that inequality by diverting resources away from the majority of children in normal schools and towards the kids in the grammar schools. So you bias the system against the majority and in favour of the minority. That is literally textbook inequality of opportunity.

"When we look at the impact of grammar schools, between economically disadvantaged and advantaged children the attainment gap is virtually zero."
True, but when you look outside of grammar schools you find that there is a direct correlation between exponentially larger attainment gaps and the prevalence of grammar schools. The average attainment gap between the affluent and poor kids in normal schools widens maaaaasssiiveelllyyyy. It's currently about 7%, in areas with many GS's that widens to about 20%.

"What [Jeremy Corbyn] seems to be defending is the system we have at the moment where there is selection in the system, but it's selection by house price."
One of the main reasons grammar schools were shut down is because it was demonstrated that they only serve to reinforce that rich-poor divide though! They naturally favour the kids from affluent families (to such a degree that the vast majority of students in GS's were from families in the upper economic percentiles) because affluent families have a strong tendency to hire private tutorage! So even if the selection is totally unbiased it will naturally favour the rich kids anyway!

It's just so disgustingly brazen.
She's totally being slipped greenbacks from somebody.

Agreed.

As we've not had grammar schools since the 1970s, where is this 'impact' they have 'looked at'??

They seem to want to move us back to some imaginary bygone era where Britain was 'Great'

Edit: Michael Rosen's comments regarding the 'meritocracy' the Tories are supposedly trying to create sums it up perfectly.

Irrationally fucked-off with the weather report. (Brit-problems, eh?)
It is NOT 32 fucking degrees, nor will it be. It will be 12 degrees. It will be cold, grey, and foggy. This island exists beyond London.

It's likely that I'm simply sleep deprived, of course.

On the BBC website this morning, the local weather report said it would be 24 degrees by now. I'm sitting in a cafe, freezing to death, and without a coat.

I feel your pain....

Jetlag. Wide awake at 3 in the morning and again at 5, knowing I'm going to pay for it in eight hours or so when I actually need to be functional :-/

Bogus religious exemption, my dearest Con.
How can there even be a religious exemption for vaccines?
Somebody point me to the verse where it says "Thou shalt not immunize thy offspring from great plagues".

There are those who decline medical intervention. I can see vaccination would fall under that.

I do not share this opinion, but I sure as hell believe people have the right to their beliefs.

For themselves sure. But I got the impression that Farawyn was talking about 'religious exemption' for somebody's kid, which I certainly don't think should be legal because it's endangering the health of the kid who can't make their own informed opinion on it.

(Well neither can a lot of adults apparently, but kids especially.)

If that is the case, in my mind it's 100% child neglect because it necessitates a sheer and complete lack of responsibility for the kids' welfare. Who at least at that point in time is dependent on their parent. In the same way parents who send their kid to school every day with a lunch consisting of 2 litres of Dr Pepper and a jumbo bag of Doritos are endangering their health by risking the effects of childhood obesity, not getting kids vaccinated is endangering their health by risking contracting a preventable disease. Especially in the USA now that they're seeing a resurgence of diseases that were previously eradicated.

We can thank California for most of that.
NYS has very strict immunization laws, comparitively.
And yes, Elle, there are religions that shun medical intervention. This religion that they stated does NOT.
The parents are just being ignorant and selfish.

Measles can kill. As can whooping cough. Rubella.
As can the flu.
Especially our youngest, and our oldest, and our pregnant, and our chronically ill.

How dare a parent not immunize their child in this day and age?

Especially based on bunk perpetuated by a discredited former doc and spread by D list celebrities.
And DeNiro? Don't even get me started on him.

It's possible to be immunised as an adult ( if you have not contracted the illness and suffered the hideous potential outcomes.)

I went to mumps parties as a kid, but didn't get mumps. I did not have a whooping cough vaccine , and got whooping cough. I also did not have a rubella vaccine ( for logistic reasons that were never corrected) but I have now rubella antibodies. We found this when I went to correct this logisitc oversight as a not young adult  because when it became something to think about earlier, I was already unwell and it was deemed inappropriate timing.

I think we have to be very careful here. I agree with you on choices I would make for feeding a child ( btw, are you cooking any more yet?) but then what about when people say...hmm, actually bdsm in a household ( regardless of children's exposure to it) is not a great idea, and being connected with a site like lit risks losing custody of kids? Is Dr Pepper better than nothing? You start from a base where you have a decent brain; some people really do not. Or...people decide germs of domestic animals are bad, so keeping pets in child households is deemed 'outside societal norms ' and frowned upon.

For some of us, governance is already too invasive, but we live by it. A virtue of allowing variation in choice and experience in society, is the very difference this brings. Survival, indeed, in the past has depended on difference in choice and outcome.

G asks me not to get involved in political or philosophical discussion here, so I will try not to be drawn further. and I note that some conversations on politics/ big topics have upset other posters to the point they feel unwelcome here, but we are here because we even have the choice to do something many would deem 'not particularly healthy' or good for those around us, etc. None of us live in houses with no glass.
I don't think we have to be particularly 'careful' because we should be thinking in terms of fact rather than ethical opinion. E.g. Regardless of how unhealthy somebody considers bdsm in a household with kids to be, the difference between that and the actions of anti-vaxxers/bad-diet-parents is that the latter two can be shown to be actually damaging to kids (And heck, even killing them in hundreds of instances) and the former can't because it just doesn't happen.

I don't see what's so controversial about wanting to ban/legislate against/discourage (maybe making vaccinations mandatory to involve a child in education or hospital treatments?) -a practice that only serves to harm people and nothing else? It's not a matter of opinion that it's harmful.

This is one of my things that gets me going. I will shut up about it now, before I start whipping out link after link of actual scientific studies.

I'll save it for my nursing boards. For now. 😈

Can I just say that I've gotten 2 full rounds of immunizations, both as a kid and as an adult, and I am perfectly fine.
K thanks bye.

WPMOT? Getting a dirty look for opening a row of RITZ CRACKERS too loudly.
