Most chains are ferrous (iron) and have coatings on them to prevent rust. They look shiny and smooth, but that layer is easily disturbed. If using an iron chain keep in mind that the burrs have been galvanized. When you remove the imperfection you are also removing the coating that keeps the chain from rusting and harboring bacteria.

Yes, it is 316 stainless steel. And as you said, some TLC was needed.

We looked into zinc-coated, and then dismissed this for the reasons you point out.

The stainless also seems...solid quality. Not the exact wording I am looking for (I need more coffee), but the heft of it, and even the sound of the metal, as the links come into contact, it is seriously, sexy steel.
