The Deafening Public Silence Following The Shooting Of 3 Indiana Men

The murder of three young men in Fort Wayne, Indiana last week has left many Muslim Americans reeling — and it has also once again brought to the forefront the little attention given to violence against black bodies in the United States.

Many Muslim and black Americans who gathered at a vigil for the three men in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday noted that the violence faced by people at the intersection of anti-blackness and Islamophobia in the United States is often ignored by both the media and the general public.

“Islamophobia now means the lion is trying to eat you,” activist and writer Tariq Touré told the crowd at Dupont Circle. “And what have black Muslims been saying? ‘The lion’s coming. Listen to me, the lion’s coming. It’s your turn.’ So if anything we see [with] these three young men dying, that we need to have solidarity.”

Mohamedtaha Omar, 23, Adam K. Mekki, 20, and Muhannad A. Tairab, 17, were shot “execution style” at a local hangout spot in Fort Wayne on February 24, but their deaths only attracted attention in mainstream media outlets days later, and have still received no response from local politicians. Omar and Tairab were Muslim, while Mekki was Christian, but all three men came from east African families.

Police have ruled out the possibility of a hate crime, based on either race or religion, but they have yet to find a motive for the shootings.

30 black students were kicked out of a Donald Trump rally for standing silently

According to the Des Moines Register, security said they were acting on Trump’s orders to remove the students, who were standing silently atop bleachers at the event. Trump’s campaign is denying the order. In video of their ejection, the students give a valid reason for their presence.

One day after 30 black students were kicked out of a Trump rally in Valdosta, Georgia, a young black woman was forcibly removed from Trump’s Super Tuesday rally in Louisville, Kentucky. Protesters and their removal isn’t surprising — but one factor makes this video even more disturbing.

Louisville Protester At Center Of Trump Rally Video Speaks Out

Multiple protesters at the rally on Tuesday in Louisville for Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump allege they were pushed by other rally attendees, and some have begun filing police complaints over the incidents.

One particular incident from the Trump rally, caught on video by WLKY, has gotten widespread attention from a national audience. The video shows an African-American woman being pushed and yelled at by several men on the floor of the Kentucky International Convention Center.

Shiya Nwanguma is the woman at the center of the video.

Nwanguma, a 21-year-old University of Louisville student majoring in public health, spoke Thursday with Jaison Gardner and Kaila Story, hosts of WFPL’s Strange Fruit, about why she attended the rally, and how the events unfolded. (Listen to the interview in the above audio player.)

Nwanguma said she went to protest at the rally alone.

“I felt like if I had a lot of people with me, it might have caused a lot of ruckus and a lot of trouble,” she said. “And while I did want to take a stand, I was mainly concerned about going there to take a stand to show Donald Trump himself. I didn’t want to antagonize his supporters whatsoever.”

She said she slowly made her way to the front of the crowd, then held up two signs that had Trump’s face Photoshopped onto a pig’s body.

“That’s not nice. I know it’s not nice. I know it’s not a positive thing,” she said. “But I thought it was harmless.”

Nwanguma said people were already trying to take the signs from her hands when Trump saw her from the podium and told the crowd to get her out.

“And then that’s when everybody started to attack me,” she said.

By the time the video starts, she’s been pushed nearly to the back of the room, she said. She said the men seen pushing her on the video hadn’t seen her signs and didn’t know why she was being ejected.

Nwanguma said she has an attorney and they haven’t yet decided whether to file charges against the people who pushed her.

“There were some pretty awful things said. I was called the N-word. I was called the C-word,” she said.

Louisville Metro Police said they would investigate any complaints from protesters regarding incidents during the rally. Commonwealth’s Attorney Tom Wine said Thursday that his office would bring to a grand jury any felony charges filed relating to the Trump rally incidents.

Update: On Thursday night, Nwanguma told WFPL she had filed a report with Louisville Metro Police over the incident.

Man Denied Entry into Marine Corps for Screaming at Black Woman during Trump Rally

A recent viral video from a Donald Trump rally in Louisville, KY, showed several people angrily shoving and attacking a young black woman, Shiya Nwanguma, as she calmly moves towards the exit. Despite telling the crowd “Stop touching me,” they continued their beratement. Nwanguma was not seriously injured in the event, and according to an interview with WLKY afterward, she was “doing well” and was “just trying to process everything.”

Joseph Pryor is one of the men who can be seen screaming in the video, and he posted a screenshot of himself screaming at the woman as his Facebook cover photo, apparently quite proud of his hateful act. Word of his actions reached his superiors, and he was promptly released from the Marine Corps training program he was attending.

The Marine Corps Recruiting Station in Louisville released this statement to announce the reasoning for their decision:

“Joseph Pryor demonstrated poor judgment in his use of social media that associates him with a racially charged altercation at a political rally. Hatred toward any group of individuals is not tolerated in the Marine Corps and he is being discharged from our delayed entry program effective yesterday.”

Joseph Pryor was not yet an actual member of the Marine Corps, as the delayed entry program is a training program to prepare recruits for actual boot camp. Joseph Pryor has listed himself on his Facebook page as a “future Marine.”

He has since deleted his Facebook page, but he cannot erase his actions.

Not only is this not the first attack against a minority at a Trump rally, as there have been a depressing amount of these incidents, it was also not the only one at this rally, according to law enforcement in the area.

“We have received three criminal complaints regarding alleged assaults at the Donald Trump rally on Monday and are actively investigating them,” according to Louisville Metro Police Department spokesperson Alicia Smiley.

During his speech to the nation on Thursday, Mitt Romney referenced these very actions that have occurred at Trump rallies repeatedly, noting that Trump has encouraged them rather than doing anything about them.

When Mitt Romney is the adult in the room, you know there’s a serious problem. The behavior seen at Trump rallies is utterly unacceptable in America, and unfortunately, this is unlikely to be the last such incident.
