Last week I was in a MacDonalds in Lo Wu (on the border of Hong Kong and China) facing the window (better to check out the passing Chinese women) and my view is blocked by an old beggar in striped pyjamas. She was staring at what I was eating, then to the guy next to me eating, and back again, holding out a tin bowl. I watched a couple of foreigners drop a few coins in the tin. I finished my burger and had about 1/3 of a cup of chips left. I got up, walked out and placed the chips into her bowl. And she bowed slightly and thanked me.
I reflected on how lucky I was compared to her...and by feeling good, probably assuaged some of my guilt in the process.

Had an acquaintance who had a stroke. Affected his decision making abilities real bad. Went from middle class job as mechanic to living in group home and walking the streets. Not his fault. Purely a brain injury. Physically he seems fine but will wet himself and not bother to shower or change. Has a real dead look in his eyes.

Another self-employed, fell and broke his back. Now just has a tiny disability pension. Can walk but can't even bend to tie his own shoes or sit comfortably. Not many self-employed handy men have generous disability benefits. Most have none.

You never know what their story is. Very rarely are they just lazy and prefer welfare. That is the case sometimes. But the ones sleeping in allies are usually mentally ill.

American megacorp I worked for left town for Mexico. Good severance package. Older worker looking for work now. Have heart disease issue. Runs in family. And suddenly went deaf on right side. Real hard to find work under those conditions. Running out of money.

Still give when I can. Good karma.

But I have heard of beggars (and who knows how they became beggars in the first place) cutting off their leg (or whatever) to earn better money. It's a career choice.

I should give an update. Earlier today, the other partner/owner who was not there that day, called me and apologized for what happened, and for his brother the other owners disregarde for customer service. Me and my friend are getting a free meal. Supposedly this isn't the first time that homeless woman has done that.
