We cannot export liberty, nor can we expend our blood and treasure in the pursuit thereof. Protecting what we have in one thing, thinking we can impose that thought on others is folly

Conversely, it's folly to think that those so immersed in a philosophy so contrarian to our constitution, way of life, liberty, will assimilate. Today is a graphic example in the event you forgot 9/11.

Of course I am up for it. But let me save you some time and trouble.

You're going to argue that Shari'a law is an uncompromising, violent, non-respecter of other faiths and that the "suicide pact" that our Constitution ISN'T therefore does not require us to harbor anyone, including American citizens BORN in this country, who espouse belief in its teachings.

And you're simply flat out wrong. The First Amendment most certainly requires that we "harbor" and protect the ENTIRE spectrum of civil rights of ANY native born citizen, most particularly freedom of religion. I don't give a damn what any religion teaches, nor do I give a damn what anyone BELIEVES about the TEACHINGS of the religion they choose to follow.

What I care about is what I know about the law, and the law does not give anyone's free "exercise of religion" the right to overthrow the government of the United States by force. That legal fact, backed by a sane immigration policy is more than sufficient to keep the Constitution from becoming a suicide pact.

Of course, who we do or do not let in, and the proper securing of our borders may be far more important in practice than lofty legal principles. But don't blame the First Amendment for allowing nut jobs -- even violent nut jobs -- to believe and advocate whatever they want. That includes nut jobs born here as well as nut jobs who have legally immigrated.

It may shock you to know that not all or even most Muslims adhere to a violent interpretation of jihad or believe the Qur'an teaches the same, your own EXPERT, plain language interpretation notwithstanding. Nor do I particularly care if they're smiling and lying about that all the way to the hardware store where they buy their fertilizer. What I care about is if they're spreading it on their gardens or stacking it in their garages for some later use that has nothing to do with agriculture. And, for the record, I pretty much favor every lawful investigative technique, including "profiling," that would help law enforcement discern in advance, what that future use might be.

For American Muslims born and raised in this country, a stance of theological moderation would likely have almost NOTHING to do with assimilation since they were never immersed in a culture or philosophy that DEMANDS that they rise up one day against whatever government they happen to live under and wrest control of it with their not-so-bare hands and present it to God as a loyal sacrifice. Moderate Muslims, not unlike moderate Christians, many of whom ALSO believe in an ultimate world theocratic government, believe that jihad is God's business and is more his job description than ours. And if he one day installs his kingdom on earth and in so doing angrily slaps all the BLT sandwiches out of our infidel hands, then so be it. I guess we'll also lose the Easter tradition of spiral-sliced hams.

The United States has already seen sufficient evidence of BOTH external and home-grown sources of Islamic terrorism directed at this country. The citizenship of the next terrorist who manages to mount a successful killing spree on American soil won't necessarily say one substantive thing about our inappropriate "tolerance" for dangerous ideology.

You don't form valid statistical conclusions from an inadequate sample size. And when it comes to terrorism, keeping the sample size statistically invalid is not just the point, it's the whole point. Or at least it is when pursued according to OUR law.
